UK Housebuilder Dandara Joins Homes for Nature Pledge Enhancing Biodiversity

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

Housebuilder Dandara has announced its participation in the Homes for Nature pledge, committing to introduce wildlife‑friendly features within new developments across the UK. The initiative involves installing a bird‑nesting brick or box, hedgehog highways, and potentially bat roosts, insect bricks and hibernation habitats at every new home, starting September 2024. This move supports biodiversity and aligns with Biodiversity Net Gain expectations that prioritise on‑site nature improvements before opting for off‑site measures.

This step builds on Dandara’s prior efforts to embed nature‑positive initiatives across its development sites. With the Homes for Nature scheme developed by a collaboration involving the Future Homes Hub’s On‑Site Nature Measures Working Group and Biodiversity Net Gain regulations, the pledge is set to continue until at least 2030, with annual reporting to monitor progress and identify additional biodiversity measures.

Jonathan Cheng, Sustainability Manager at Dandara, emphasised the company’s duty to ensure its development practices support wildlife and contribute to habitat restoration. He highlighted that this transformative initiative featuring nest boxes, hedgehog highways and other nature‑friendly features marks a meaningful progression towards enhancing biodiversity in new communities.

What this means:
– Enhancing biodiversity directly within housing developments sets a precedent in the construction industry, showing how nature can be integrated into built environments.
– Measures like hedgehog highways enable safer movement for wildlife, while nest bricks and insect habitats support local ecosystems.
– By committing to annual reporting, Dandara and associated developers will help drive transparency and accountability in nature‑positive development until 2030.
