TfL and TotalEnergies Expand Rapid EV Charging Across London

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Transport for London (TfL) has awarded a new contract to TotalEnergies to roll out up to 43 rapid and ultra‑rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers across London, further bolstering the capital’s EV infrastructure. The chargers, rated at 100 kW and 200 kW, will be installed on public land and capable of recharging vehicles within approximately 30 minutes. Locations will focus on high‑usage routes used by taxis and freight operators, as well as key high streets and local amenity areas, with a concentration in south London boroughs including Bromley, Lewisham and Sutton. These additions build on work already underway, such as earlier installations by Zest, another operator delivering rapid EV charging bays across TfL’s estate. London’s charging network now totals over 27,980 public points about a third of the UK’s provision and more than 1,550 of these offer rapid or ultra‑rapid charging. TfL projects that by 2030 the city will need between 43,000 and 51,000 charging points, including up to 3,500 rapid chargers, making this latest deployment a key step toward that goal. In support of this initiative, TfL will continue to unlock public land for EV bays and work with public-sector partners to expand the network, underpinning London’s role at the forefront of the UK electric vehicle transition.
What this means:
This latest investment signals a tangible advance for London’s shift to zero‑emission transport, especially for high‑mileage commercial users who rely on swift charging capabilities. Enhanced infrastructure in south London improves equitable access for residents without home charging options, breaking down a major barrier to EV adoption. With the scale of charging demand expected to grow substantially by 2030, these deployments—combined with collaboration between TfL, the GLA Group, and private operators demonstrate a proactive and coordinated approach to decarbonising urban transport and improving air quality.
