In a key net-zero move, EVCP funds Southport EV charging hub

Welcome to Net Zero News, where we bring you the latest developments driving the UK’s transition to a net-zero future. In a significant step towards bolstering the electric vehicle charging network, Net Zero News can reveal that EV Charge Point Operator (EVCP) has launched its first public charging site at Kew Retail Park in Southport under the brand ‘Charge & Go!’.
On 29 October 2025, EVCP officially opened four high-power charging bays adjacent to the retail park’s main car park. The chargers, offering up to 150kW DC fast charging capacity, are capable of replenishing most mainstream EVs from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. The site also features contactless payment options and real-time availability information accessible via the Charge & Go! mobile app.
Founded in 2024, EVCP aims to establish a coast-to-coast network of rapid chargers to support the UK’s growing EV market. Net Zero News understands this Southport installation forms part of a broader roll-out plan to deploy 50 charging sites nationwide by the end of 2026. The company has emphasised its commitment to sourcing 100 percent renewable electricity for all its stations, aligning with corporate sustainability credentials.
This development is significant for the UK’s net-zero transition, as widespread charging infrastructure is critical to overcome range anxiety and accelerate EV uptake. By expanding accessible fast-charging points beyond city centres, EVCP is helping to ensure that drivers in seaside towns and regional hubs can confidently switch away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
The introduction of these high-power chargers is projected to cut over 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, assuming average utilisation rates. Local residents and commuters will benefit from reduced tailpipe pollution, while retailers at Kew Retail Park may see increased dwell times and footfall as EV drivers recharge during their shopping trips.
EVCP financed the Southport site with a £350,000 private investment and secured support from Sefton Council’s Low Emission Transport Fund. The project was delivered in partnership with retail park owner Kew Retail Management, which provided land access and facilitated grid connections. Installation work was carried out by accredited EV infrastructure specialist ChargeTech Solutions.
This charge point launch aligns with the UK government’s Strategic Action Plan for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, which sets an ambition for nationwide rapid charger availability every 30 miles by 2030. It also supports the Department for Transport’s ZEV Mandate and the North West Energy and Hydrogen Cluster’s objectives to decarbonise road transport across the region.
Local businesses stand to gain from the increased footfall, while EVCP’s model demonstrates how private investment can fill gaps in public charging provision. Communities in the North West will have greater confidence in transitioning to electric vehicles, and the project serves as a blueprint for future roll-outs in comparable retail and leisure locations.
Looking ahead, EVCP plans to open its next four Charge & Go! sites by Q2 2026 in Lancaster, Morecambe, Blackpool and Preston. Each new installation will mirror the Southport template, delivering at least four rapid chargers at key commuter and tourist destinations, further strengthening the network and supporting the UK’s journey to net zero.
