Invest in eHGV Charging Infrastructure, Urges Daimler Truck

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,
In an inspiring call to action, James Venables, the Head of Future Sustainability at Daimler Truck UK, has emphasised the urgent need for increased investment in the UK’s public charging infrastructure. This pivotal move is essential for operators making the crucial switch to electric transportation, a transition that is vital for achieving net-zero goals.
The backdrop to Venables’ remarks comes in light of the UK government’s announcement of a substantial £30 million funding boost for its Depot Charging Scheme (DCS). This financial commitment is expected to facilitate the installation of over 3,000 van charge points and 200 HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) charge points, marking a significant step forward in the electrification of the transport sector.
While Venables has hailed this initiative as a “great start,” he firmly believes that there is still “more to do” to foster greater uptake of electric vehicles (EVs). He articulated that fresh investments must be strategically allocated, particularly towards HGV charging infrastructure. According to him, charging points need to provide “high enough power” and be situated “in the right places” to effectively support the needs of operators.
In an ideal scenario, Venables envisions a seamless integration of charging solutions across various locations, including depots, delivery sites, and strategic points along the road network. This approach would not only enhance the convenience for operators but also ensure that electric vehicles can operate efficiently across the UK.
Currently, Venables noted that the private sector is spearheading the development of public charging infrastructure for HGVs. However, he cautioned that this effort alone will not suffice. Daimler Truck UK advocates for a robust governmental role in this transition, highlighting the necessity of collaboration between public and private sectors to create a comprehensive charging network.
In an ambitious collaboration, Daimler Truck and Milence have teamed up with Volvo Group and the Traton Group to establish public charging facilities across Europe. The first location in the UK, situated in Immingham, has already opened its doors, setting a precedent for future developments.
Venables elaborated on the advantages of high-powered and megawatt charging systems, stating that they are incredibly efficient for electric HGVs. These systems allow for battery top-ups to align perfectly with mandatory driver breaks, which is a practical and sensible solution for the logistics industry.
“Many of our customers plan to have depot charging facilities installed,” Venables explained. “However, the establishment of better public infrastructure—specifically, the right charging points in the right places—will play a crucial role in building confidence among operators. This is a key enabler for the transition to sustainable transportation.”
Aside from technical and power requirements, Venables stressed the importance of ensuring that public charging infrastructure remains cost-competitive. He also advocated for intelligent charging solutions that allow drivers to pre-book charging slots and check the availability of the network before embarking on their journeys. Such innovations would significantly enhance the user experience and facilitate smoother operations.
“The more we can do to support early adopters of electric trucks, the more visible these vehicles will become on our roads,” Venables continued. “This visibility is crucial, as it demonstrates the capability of electric trucks to meet the demands of UK logistics—covering substantial distances and hauling significant loads. This, in turn, will instil confidence in other operators that electric trucks can thrive in real-world conditions.”
In conclusion, the call for improved public charging infrastructure is not just about convenience; it is about enabling a transformative shift towards sustainable transportation. The collaboration between the government and the private sector, alongside strategic investments, is paramount to ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. As we continue to advocate for net-zero solutions, the insights from leaders like James Venables serve as a guiding light towards a greener future.
