Enhanced Vauxhall Astra PHEV: Better Range, Lower BiK, Price Drop

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!

Exciting news is making waves in the automotive world as Vauxhall unveils its latest Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-In Hybrids. These new models are not only more powerful and efficient but are also significantly more affordable, making them an attractive option for eco-conscious drivers.

The latest generation of Vauxhall’s plug-in hybrids comes equipped with a larger 17.2kWh battery, providing an impressive electric driving range of up to 52 miles according to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure). This is a notable improvement from the previous models, which featured a 12.4kWh battery that allowed for a maximum electric range of just 35 miles.

In addition to enhancing battery capacity, Vauxhall has also boosted the performance of these vehicles. Both the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer now feature a powertrain that combines a 125hp electric motor with a 150hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This results in a total power output of 195hp, an increase from the previous 180hp, achieved at 6,000rpm. The maximum combined torque has also risen to 360Nm at 1,750rpm, ensuring a responsive driving experience.

Drivers will appreciate the introduction of a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, optimised for enhanced performance. Vauxhall has also included a mode selector on the centre console, allowing drivers to choose from three distinct driving modes: Hybrid, Sport, and Electric. This versatility ensures that drivers can tailor their driving experience to their preferences, whether they’re looking for efficiency, performance, or a combination of both.

For those seeking a sportier edge, the Astra GSE variant comes equipped with the same upgraded 17.2kWh lithium-ion battery and 125hp electric motor. This model delivers an electric range of up to 50 miles and is combined with a more powerful 180hp version of the petrol engine, resulting in a total power output of 225hp. The GSE variant boasts a maximum torque of 360Nm and can achieve a top speed of 146mph, with a swift 0-62mph time of just 7.6 seconds (7.7 seconds for the Astra Sports Tourer GSE). A specially tuned GSE engine sound adds to the excitement of the driving experience.

What’s even more compelling is the pricing. The new Astra Plug-In Hybrid starts at £36,145, with significant price reductions compared to their predecessors. The GSE grade sees savings of up to £4,955, while the Ultimate trim benefits from a £4,835 reduction. The GS variant also enjoys a decrease of £3,570 compared to the previous generation. The Sports Tourer models are similarly competitively priced, with reductions of up to £4,955 for the Sports Tourer GSE and substantial savings of £3,600 and £4,835 for the GS and Ultimate trims, respectively.

The GSE models are particularly appealing for performance enthusiasts, starting at £38,795 for the hatchback—a £4,805 decrease from the previous version. The Sports Tourer GSE begins at £39,995, reflecting a near £5,000 reduction. Importantly, all models remain priced below the £40,000 threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement vehicle tax, making them a more financially viable option for many drivers.

For company car drivers, the extended electric driving range presents a significant tax advantage. The Business Income Tax (BiK) rate for the hatchback GS 195hp has dropped into the lower 9% bracket. For a taxpayer in the 20% band, the monthly BiK cost for the GS version is £53.97, translating to an annual cost of £647.64. This makes the Astra Plug-In Hybrid an appealing choice for businesses looking to reduce their overall tax liabilities while promoting sustainability.

Charging the Astra Plug-In Hybrid is a straightforward process. With the optional 7kW on-board charger, the vehicle can recharge from 20-100% in just two hours and 53 minutes when connected to a 7.4kW AC charger. Alternatively, using the standard 3.7kW on-board charger, the charging time extends to four hours and six minutes from a 3.7kW AC source.

Available in both GS and top-of-the-range Ultimate trims, the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-In Hybrids are well-equipped with modern technology and features aimed at providing a superior driving experience. Each model features a 10-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with full LED headlights, high beam assist, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, speed sign recognition, driver drowsiness alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

The GS versions stand out with a contrasting black roof, a black Griffin logo, and a Vizor frame at the front, complemented by 17-inch black alloy wheels. Additional highlights include the Intelli-Vision 360-degree panoramic parking camera, heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, keyless entry and start, and the Pure Panel Pro digital display. The driver’s sport-style seat features eight-way adjustment and is certified by the AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs), prioritising comfort and support.

Stepping up to the Ultimate trim, buyers will gain access to Vauxhall’s adaptive Intelli-Lux Pixel headlights, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, and sustainable ReNewKnit premium seat trim. The Ultimate trim also includes a panoramic glass sunroof, an Intelli-HUD head-up display, a 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, and a suite of driver assistance features that encompass lane change assist with side blind spot alert, lane positioning assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Astra GSE distinguishes itself from the standard Astra line-up with unique design elements, including bespoke bumpers and aerodynamically optimised gloss-black, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. It features a sportier stance, riding 10mm lower than standard models and benefitting from a unique chassis set-up equipped with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology and customised steering calibration.

Inside, the GSE showcases a performance-oriented seat design that maintains AGR approval while offering heated Alcantara-trimmed seats. The driver’s seat includes 10-way electric adjustment with a memory function for added convenience. Other interior highlights encompass a panoramic sunroof, an Intelli-HUD head-up display, and a wireless smartphone charger, ensuring that drivers enjoy both style and functionality.

As we look towards a greener future, the Vauxhall Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-In Hybrids exemplify the shift towards more sustainable driving options without compromising on performance or comfort. With their improved electric range, competitive pricing, and a host of advanced features, these models are well-positioned to appeal to the environmentally conscious driver seeking a practical and stylish vehicle.

The Astra Plug-In Hybrid and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-In Hybrid are more than just cars; they represent Vauxhall’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting a sustainable automotive future. As we navigate the road to net zero, vehicles like these are paving the way for a cleaner and greener world.
