Driving the Volkswagen Tayron: A Week Behind the Wheel

Greetings, Net Zero News Community,

In a world increasingly dominated by electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, it’s refreshing to explore an option that stands apart from the crowd. While electric vehicles (EVs) are often hailed as the future of transportation, there remains a demographic that either requires a larger vehicle or simply prefers the traditional powertrain experience. Enter the Volkswagen Tayron, a vehicle that not only meets the needs of families but also offers a sense of nostalgia in a modern package. Join me as I recount my week-long experience with this impressive seven-seater hybrid SUV.

Day 1: First Impressions

The Volkswagen Tayron may be classified as a hybrid, but it possesses a certain charm that sets it apart from the plethora of electric vehicles on the market. With its striking Dolphin Grey paint—an optional extra at £810—and bold exterior design, the Tayron exudes an air of confidence and capability. Its imposing presence on the road is a welcome sight, especially for those who appreciate traditional automotive aesthetics.

Day 2: Practicality Put to the Test

On the second day, I had the opportunity to assess the Tayron’s practicality by taking a trip with six passengers on board. The spacious interior provided ample room for everyone, and the boot, even with the third row of seats up, offered a commendable 345 litres of storage. Folding the seats down transforms the space into a cavernous 850 litres, expanding further to an astonishing 1,905 litres with the second row flattened. While I didn’t have any large items to transport during my week with the Tayron, it was clear that this vehicle would handle such tasks with ease.

The Tayron’s ‘virtual pedal’ system deserves a mention as well. Typically, I struggle with these touchless systems, but this one functioned remarkably well. As I approached the rear of the vehicle, the boot opened with minimal effort on my part, making loading and unloading a breeze—although I did inadvertently activate it a few times!

Day 3: Performance Insights

With a 1.5-litre engine under the bonnet, the Tayron’s performance may not be what one would expect from a seven-seater SUV. With a gross vehicle weight of 2,310kg, one might assume that the powertrain would struggle; however, this is not the case. The turbocharged engine delivers a respectable 150 horsepower and 250Nm of torque, allowing the Tayron to navigate a variety of driving scenarios with relative ease. Although it isn’t a performance vehicle—after all, who expects speed from a family SUV?—the Tayron manages to deliver a calm and efficient driving experience, even if the engine occasionally emits a roar under acceleration.

Day 4: Interior Comfort and Quality

As manufacturers strive to keep costs down, it is becoming increasingly common to see compromises made in interior quality. Thankfully, Volkswagen remains committed to providing a comfortable and high-quality cabin experience. The Tayron’s R-Line ‘ArtVelours’ upholstery, complemented by matching trim on the dashboard and door panels, creates an inviting atmosphere. Additions such as heated ‘sports comfort’ seats, brushed stainless steel pedals, and matte chrome door handles further enhance the overall quality of the interior. It’s clear that the Tayron is designed to be a pleasant space for both driver and passengers alike.

Day 5: Family Adventures

Day five saw me embarking on a mission to collect my son, Challen Jnr, and four of his friends after the Reading Festival. With a long round trip ahead, I was grateful for the Tayron’s comfortable seating and ample room. As we journeyed through the congested roads filled with other parents making similar trips, the children quickly fell asleep, a testament to the vehicle’s smooth ride quality and serene cabin environment. The Tayron effortlessly made what could have been a stressful drive into a relaxed experience for all involved.

Day 6: Reflecting on the Tayron’s Place

As my week with the Volkswagen Tayron drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on its role in the current automotive landscape. While large vehicles may not be for everyone, there is still a significant market for those who require more space without compromising on comfort and quality. The Tayron stands out as a capable option for families seeking a reliable and spacious vehicle. It excels in meeting the demands of everyday life, offering a high standard of performance and comfort that many drivers crave.

Final Thoughts

In a time where the push for electric vehicles is stronger than ever, it’s important to recognise that not all consumers fit into the ‘EV or nothing’ category. The Volkswagen Tayron serves as a reminder that there are still those who appreciate the practicality and comfort of a hybrid SUV. While it may not be the most popular choice on the market, the Tayron certainly delivers on its promise of space, quality, and versatility. For families in need of a reliable seven-seater, this vehicle is well worth considering.

As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of transportation, let us remember that there is room for various solutions, even in a world seeking to achieve net-zero emissions. Whether through electric vehicles or hybrid options like the Tayron, our ultimate goal should be to find solutions that cater to diverse needs while reducing our impact on the planet.

Thank you for joining me on this journey with the Volkswagen Tayron. Until next time, let’s continue championing the move towards a sustainable and inclusive automotive future!
