Zest Launches Urban Charging Hub in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

In a significant stride towards enhancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Zest, one of the UK’s fastest-growing public charging networks, has unveiled a state-of-the-art ultra-rapid charging hub located near Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter. This ambitious project underscores the company’s commitment to expanding EV facilities in areas that have been underserved, thereby promoting a greener, more sustainable future.

The newly established hub, situated on what was once the derelict land of Park Road South—formerly home to the Hockley Rail Station—has been transformed into a modern EV charging facility. Featuring 16 charging bays, the hub boasts impressive charging speeds of up to 300kW. Additionally, the site is equipped with an InPost mail locker, providing further convenience to users.

Currently, ultra-rapid charging options are scarce in this part of Birmingham, making the Zest hub a welcome addition. With charging prices set at a competitive 65p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), this facility significantly undercuts local alternatives, making it a more economical choice for drivers. Customers can easily pay for their charging via the Zest app, utilise contactless payment methods, or access roaming services through partner apps such as Octopus Electroverse and Plugsurfing. For commercial drivers, the Allstar app provides an additional payment option, ensuring that all users can benefit from this new facility.

This latest hub launch is part of a broader initiative by Zest to roll out urban charging hubs across the UK, with recent openings in Enfield, Leicester, and Bolton. Each of these hubs is designed to fill critical gaps in EV infrastructure, making electric vehicle ownership a more viable option for everyone, regardless of their location.

Speaking on the occasion, Councillor Chaman Lal from Birmingham City Council expressed optimism about the project’s impacts, stating, “The Jewellery Quarter is one of Birmingham’s most historic and vibrant areas, and investments such as this help secure its future. Public EV charging supports not just cleaner travel but also the ongoing regeneration of the area—attracting visitors, supporting businesses, and improving the environment for everyone.”

Robin Heap, CEO of Zest, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of accessibility in electric driving. “To make electric driving a realistic choice for everyone, charging must be convenient and accessible in every community,” he remarked. “This new hub in Birmingham helps close the infrastructure gap while supporting the city’s regeneration—bringing cleaner air, attracting investment, and helping tackle climate change. It’s a step towards a more sustainable future for local people and visitors alike.”

As the UK continues to shift towards electric mobility, the establishment of such charging hubs is crucial. They not only alleviate range anxiety for EV drivers but also foster a more environmentally conscious society. By providing convenient charging solutions, Zest is paving the way for a future where electric vehicles become the norm rather than the exception.

In conclusion, the opening of this ultra-rapid charging hub near Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter represents a significant advancement in the UK’s EV infrastructure. It serves as a beacon of progress for the region, showcasing how targeted investments in charging facilities can stimulate economic growth, enhance local businesses, and contribute to environmental sustainability. As we move toward a net-zero future, initiatives like these are essential in ensuring that electric vehicles are not just a fad but a fundamental component of our everyday lives.

Stay tuned for more updates on EV infrastructure and sustainability initiatives in the UK as we continue to champion the cause of a cleaner, greener planet. Together, we can drive the change towards a sustainable future.
