Voltempo Launches Production of Megawatt Charging System

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,
In a significant stride towards a sustainable future, Voltempo has commenced series production of its innovative megawatt charging system (MCS), known as the HyperCharger. This development is a pivotal moment in the United Kingdom’s journey to achieve zero-emission road freight, and it showcases the potential for transformative change in the logistics sector.
The grand opening of Voltempo’s state-of-the-art facility took place on 23rd September, presided over by Sir Vince Cable, Chair of the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium. The event was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham, a site where Voltempo has flourished over the past 20 months, expanding its workforce from a modest three employees to a robust team of over 50 individuals.
As the lead partner in the eFREIGHT 2030 consortium, Voltempo is instrumental in the UK government’s ambitious £200 million Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator Programme (ZEHID), which is executed in collaboration with Innovate UK. This initiative aims to pioneer the transition to zero-emission freight solutions, and Voltempo’s HyperCharger is at the forefront of this transformative effort.
Under the eFREIGHT 2030 project, a total of seven fleets and two dedicated charging hubs are set to deploy Voltempo HyperChargers. Each hub features a minimum of six bays, boasting an impressive 1,000kW capacity. Additionally, two more fleets are embracing Voltempo’s lower-powered charging solutions, highlighting the versatility and scalability of the technology.
The first eFREIGHT 2030 site is already operational, and by the second quarter of 2026, it is anticipated that the UK will boast the largest network of MCS-capable chargers. Each HyperCharger is meticulously designed for future upgrades, ready to support trucks equipped with MCS charge ports of 700kW or more as soon as they arrive on UK roads. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the infrastructure remains relevant and capable of meeting evolving industry demands.
One of the standout features of the HyperCharger is its unique “halo” design, specifically engineered for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). This design elevates and protects the substantial charging cables, preventing damage and enhancing safety in bustling logistics depots. The intuitive LED halo interface simplifies the charging process, eliminating the confusion often associated with charging stations. With no need for touchscreens, cards, or apps, drivers can effortlessly plug in and commence charging.
The HyperCharger’s compliance with OCPP 2.0 guarantees compatibility with all plug-and-charge enabled vehicles. This thoughtful design minimises downtime and maintenance requirements, ensuring a more dependable charging experience for users. The reliability of the HyperCharger not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions in the freight sector.
Michael Boxwell, the CEO of Voltempo, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the HyperCharger, stating: “Starting series production of the HyperCharger is a defining moment – not just for Voltempo, but for the UK’s journey towards zero-emission freight. Our technology has been designed from day one to meet the real-world needs of logistics operators, and we’re proud to be creating green jobs and driving innovation right here in Birmingham.”
Sir Vince Cable, reflecting on the importance of this initiative, remarked: “I’m delighted to officially open Voltempo’s new facility and mark the start of series production for the HyperCharger. This is a major step forward – not just for Voltempo, but for the UK’s transition to zero-emission road freight. The HyperCharger is central to the success of the eFREIGHT 2030 programme and demonstrates how British innovation can create skilled jobs, attract investment, and build the infrastructure we need to compete in the global clean transport economy.”
David Horsfall, Director of Property and Sustainability at Tyseley Energy Park, shared his pride in Voltempo’s trajectory: “It has been a pleasure to see Voltempo grow so substantially during their time at Tyseley Energy Park, expanding from just three people to a team of 50 in under two years. Their HyperCharger is a leading example of how the UK can innovate to support zero-emission freight. By working with industrial partners like Voltempo, we can test and demonstrate cutting-edge technologies at scale – further strengthening TEP’s role as a national hub for clean energy and low-carbon transport.”
Neale Ryan, Head of Land and Maritime Transport at Innovate UK, added: “Designed and manufactured in Great Britain, this showcases UK innovation in zero-emission freight, and highlights the power of UK support in helping companies like Voltempo progress through multiple stages of development. The ZEHID programme, funded by the UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, will generate valuable insights into the future of road transport. Innovate UK is proud to support this effort, which plays a key role in accelerating the shift to zero-emission freight and advancing the UK’s net zero ambitions.”
As we witness the evolution of charging infrastructure tailored for electric heavy goods vehicles, it becomes evident that initiatives like Voltempo’s HyperCharger are not merely about technology; they are about paving the way for a sustainable future. The commitment to creating green jobs, fostering innovation, and enhancing operational efficiency underscores the importance of transitioning to a zero-emission freight system.
The landscape of logistics is changing, and with it, the opportunities for businesses and the environment alike. The transition to zero-emission road freight is not just a necessity but an imperative for the health of our planet. With the introduction of advanced charging solutions like the HyperCharger, the UK is positioning itself as a leader in this critical sector, demonstrating that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
As the UK progresses towards its net zero goals, the significance of effective charging infrastructure cannot be overstated. Voltempo’s HyperCharger represents a significant leap forward in this domain, and its rollout will undoubtedly set a benchmark for future developments in electric vehicle charging technologies.
In conclusion, the journey towards zero-emission road freight is well underway, and with the support of innovative companies like Voltempo, the UK is making remarkable strides. The HyperCharger is not just a product; it is a symbol of hope and progress for a cleaner, greener future. As we continue to advocate for sustainable practices and technologies, let us celebrate these milestones that bring us closer to achieving our net zero ambitions.
