Velux’s strides in biodiversity highlight corporate role in net zero transition

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

In a clear demonstration of how businesses can help advance both environmental and biodiversity goals amid the shift toward net zero, Velux has made significant progress. The company cut its operational emissions by 11% in 2024, reinforcing a cumulative reduction of 60% since 2020. This reduction from 52 kt CO₂e in 2020 to 21 kt CO₂e last year was achieved through greater reliance on renewable energy and enhanced energy efficiency at its production facilities. In parallel, Velux is extending its sustainability strategy across its supply chain via a ten‑year partnership with a steelmaker to procure lower‑carbon steel.

Beyond decarbonisation, Velux has launched pilot initiatives focused on circularity and biodiversity. These include take‑back schemes and refurbishment services aimed at keeping products in use for longer. On the biodiversity front, the company developed a bespoke assessment method to evaluate the ecological impact of its sites and is now implementing local ecosystem improvements across its operations in Denmark, Poland, Italy and Hungary.

What this means:
This multi‑pronged approach highlights how companies can integrate biodiversity protection within broader net zero strategies. Velux’s actions offer a model for others: pairing deep emission cuts with forward‑looking supply chain shifts, product lifecycle management and proactive environmental restoration. The emerging emphasis on biodiversity alongside decarbonisation signals a more holistic understanding of sustainability, one that aligns corporate ambition with ecological stewardship.
