UK Power Networks joins Data Centre Alliance in net-zero funding

Welcome to Net Zero News, where we bring you the latest developments driving the UK’s transition to a net-zero future. Today we report on a significant partnership that brings together a major network operator and a leading data centre body.

Net Zero News can reveal that UK Power Networks has become the first Distribution Network Operator in the UK to sign up as a strategic partner of the Data Centre Alliance. This landmark agreement was confirmed by both organisations in mid-November 2025 and marks a new level of collaboration between the electricity distribution sector and the UK data centre industry.

In a sector defined by rising electricity demand and an imperative to decarbonise, this partnership connects one of the country’s largest distribution network operators with the Data Centre Alliance, the membership body representing data centre professionals and organisations. Distribution Network Operators like UK Power Networks manage high-voltage assets and local networks that deliver power to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure. Data centres, which support cloud computing, digital services and large-scale computing operations, rely on resilient, low-carbon electricity supplies.

By formalising its role as a strategic partner of the Data Centre Alliance, UK Power Networks will contribute technical expertise on network capacity, flexibility and connection policy. This collaboration comes as the UK seeks to balance surging electrification of end-use sectors with the need to keep electricity networks resilient and carbon-lean. It also aligns with national targets to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, under the Climate Change Act, and interim carbon budgets set by the UK government.

In a significant step towards the UK’s net-zero goals, the partnership is expected to foster innovation in grid integration of data centre loads, which can be both electricity-intensive and highly variable. Net Zero News understands this forms part of a broader industry drive to develop smarter network solutions, such as demand-side response, energy storage and dynamic connections. These measures aim to ensure that data centres can scale without compromising the stability of local grids or increasing reliance on high-carbon backup generation.

Although no financial details have been disclosed, UK Power Networks and the Data Centre Alliance have confirmed they will work together on technical workshops, best practice guidance and pilot projects. The alliance will draw on UK Power Networks’ experience in managing complex network reinforcements and in delivering low-carbon network strategies. At the same time, the distribution operator will benefit from insight into emerging data centre technologies, modular designs and sustainability frameworks.

This collaboration arrives against a policy backdrop in which the UK government has emphasised the need for smarter, more flexible power networks. The Electricity Networks Strategic Framework, published in recent years, set out ambitions for network operators to enable decarbonisation and support growth in sectors such as electric vehicles, heat pumps and data centres. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, devolved administrations have also introduced strategies to enhance network flexibility and integrate renewable generation.

For communities and businesses served by UK Power Networks, this partnership could translate into more reliable connections for data centres seeking to deploy low-carbon technologies, as well as the potential for collaborative local energy projects. The data centre sector stands to gain from streamlined grid access and clearer pathways to secure renewable or zero-carbon power. At the same time, local electricity customers could benefit from network-wide improvements in digital monitoring and automated fault management, driven by innovations piloted through the alliance.

Looking ahead, both organisations plan to outline a timetable for joint activity during the first quarter of 2026. Net Zero News understands they will announce specific initiatives and working groups aimed at unlocking network flexibility and advancing the adoption of on-site generation and energy storage at data centre sites. Stakeholders across industry and government will be watching to see how this strategic partnership accelerates progress towards a fully decarbonised power sector supporting the UK’s digital backbone.
