UK net-zero: Fastned wins funding for EV retrofit hub

Welcome to Net Zero News, where we bring you the latest developments driving the UK’s transition to a net-zero future. Today we report on an innovative indoor ultra-rapid charging hub granted planning permission by Aberdeen City Council inside a central warehouse, marking a significant step for Scotland’s EV infrastructure.

In a significant move, Aberdeen City Council has green-lit Fastned to construct a brand-new ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hub within a repurposed warehouse on the city’s outskirts. Net Zero News can reveal that permission was granted earlier this month following a streamlined application process, with the project slated to begin construction in early 2026.

Fastned’s proposal involves installing eight 300 kW chargers under a covered canopy, enabling simultaneous high-power charging even in adverse weather. The indoor setting promises improved maintenance access, enhanced safety and reduced visual impact. Vehicle owners will benefit from sheltered bays, integrated lighting and automated payment systems designed to streamline the charging experience.

This development supports Aberdeen’s ambitious target to reduce emissions by 75 percent by 2030, as set out in the city’s Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy. It also complements Scotland’s net-zero deadline of 2045 and adheres to the Scottish Energy Strategy’s emphasis on expanding EV charging corridors across urban centres.

The hub is expected to cut transport-related CO₂ emissions in the Aberdeen area by an estimated 4,000 tonnes annually once fully operational. By delivering ultra-rapid speeds, Fastned aims to accelerate EV adoption among haulage operators and private motorists alike, while smoothing peak electricity demand through smart charging protocols.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project is forecast to create up to 20 skilled jobs during the warehouse refurbishment and ongoing operations. Net Zero News understands this forms part of a broader push to regenerate disused industrial properties and stimulate local supply chains in sectors from construction to electrical engineering.

Key stakeholders include Fastned, the Aberdeen City region’s economic development team, and the Scottish Government’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Delivery Programme. The initiative is co-funded through a mix of private equity and a £1.5 million award from Scotland’s Just Transition Fund, with additional support from Innovate UK for smart grid integration.

Fastned has also partnered with SP Energy Networks to conduct a grid capacity upgrade ensuring stable power delivery for high-volume charging. This collaboration mirrors similar undertakings reported in our recent coverage of the UK’s EV charging strategy, which outlines mechanisms for expanding hubs in underserved areas (see our analysis of the UK EV charging strategy).

The project aligns with the UK Transport Decarbonisation Plan and the National Grid’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap. Net Zero News understands this forms part of the wider Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub cluster, strengthening the city’s credentials as a clean energy innovation centre following our earlier report on the region’s hydrogen economy.

Local businesses and residents have welcomed the development. Fleet operators serving the North Sea oil and gas sector will gain faster charging turnaround, and urban commuters can avoid roadside queues. The indoor design also addresses community concerns over light pollution and noise, reinforcing Fastned’s commitment to social licence.

Innovations in the facility will include real-time grid monitoring, onsite battery storage to mitigate peak loads and integrated solar canopy panels to offset operational emissions. These features echo themes from our coverage of advanced energy storage solutions in the UK, underscoring the sector’s shift towards multifaceted clean energy hubs.

Looking ahead, Fastned plans to break ground in January 2026, with completion targeted for the final quarter of the same year. Trials of smart charging algorithms and customer onboarding will commence before the official launch, ensuring the hub meets both technical and community expectations.
