UK National Parks Lead Biodiversity and Carbon Action with Race to Zero

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.

In a landmark move, the UK’s 15 National Parks have become the first protected landscapes in the world to join the Race to Zero initiative, committing to halve emissions by 2030 and become net carbon sinks by 2050. This bold pledge spans nearly 610,000 hectares an area nearly four times the size of London marking a major step for nature restoration and climate action. Ambitious plans include restoring 168,000 hectares of peatland, establishing 218,400 hectares of new woodland, and introducing regenerative agriculture across 224,000 hectares. Combined, these efforts are projected to shift the parks from emitting approximately 11.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually in 2022 to absorbing around 3.5 million tonnes by mid-century. These actions represent a central tenet of the Race to Zero global ambition and align with the UK’s broader net-zero landscape goals, potentially achieving sink status as early as 2040. The initiative also aims to improve flood resilience, heatwave adaptation, ecosystem biodiversity, rural livelihoods, air quality, and local economies through nature-friendly land use and sustainable food systems.

What this means: This pioneering commitment sets a precedent for landscape-scale carbon and biodiversity integration. By leveraging protected areas to deliver triple-win outcomes for climate, nature, and communities the parks showcase how nature-rich management can accelerate progress toward national net-zero and biodiversity objectives.
