UK Logistics Accelerate Green Transition with New Electric HGVs and Charging Hubs

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
Royal Mail has deployed its first eight battery‑electric 42‑tonne HGVs at its Midlands and North West parcel hubs, replacing diesel trucks with DAF XD 350E models that benefit from ABB T360 chargers capable of adding 60 miles in under 15 minutes. This move is expected to cut around one thousand tonnes of carbon annually, contributing toward Royal Mail’s net‑zero target by 2040. The Electric Freightway initiative, backed by over £100 million including £62.7 million from government, will support a network of more than 200 rapid chargers and collect operational data over five years to inform further scale‑up.
Wincanton has introduced 24 new electric trucks supplied by DAF, Volvo, and Renault, forecast to reduce CO2 emissions by around 2,400 tonnes annually. New depot charging infrastructure is being installed across key sites including Greenford, Portbury, and Northamptonshire to support its electrified fleet and participation in the Electric Freightway and eFREIGHT 2030 segments of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme.
M&S continues its net‑zero by 2040 path with 85 new zero or lower emission vehicles added to its logistics fleet. This includes five battery‑electric HGVs operating from Welham Green to London and the South East, replacing diesel equivalents; additionally, 30 biomethane‑fueled compressed natural gas vehicles and 50 other low‑emission trucks have been introduced, covering almost 10% of its transport fleet.
eFREIGHT 2030 has expanded its consortium with the addition of Tarmac and TVS Interfleet, who will deploy eHGVs for construction logistics, including electric vehicles tailored for concrete and aggregate hauling. Meanwhile, ZENFreight has brought DFDS’s first Volvo FM Electric HGV into operation in Liverpool, supported by a new high‑capacity charging site enabling full charges in two hours and multiple daily delivery rounds. John G Russell (Transport) has also joined ZENFreight to trial both battery‑electric and hydrogen fuel cell HGVs, with depot-based charging and hydrogen storage infrastructure being installed in Glasgow.
On the infrastructure front, Voltempo began series production of its HyperCharger megawatt charging system at Birmingham’s Tyseley Energy Park an essential step in equipping the UK for commercial-scale zero‑emission freight. Fleete has broken ground on what is expected to become the country’s largest dedicated EV charging facility for HGVs and fleets at the Port of Tilbury, with a 5MW hub hosting 16 rapid chargers, set to open later this year. Additionally, Gridserve’s Electric Freightway has launched the UK’s first motorway‑based public eHGV charging hubs at Extra Baldock (A1(M), J10) and Moto Exeter (M5, J30).
These developments occur against a backdrop of stronger policy support. The government has extended Plug‑in Van and Truck Grants through at least April 2027 and provided an extra £18 million funding boost for the Plug‑in Truck Grant in 2025/26, enabling discounts up to £120,000 on electric trucks and offering much‑needed investment certainty for fleet operators.
What this means:
– The UK logistics sector is accelerating its low‑carbon transformation with real‑world deployment of electric HGVs and rapid charging infrastructure. This includes operational implementations by Royal Mail, Wincanton, M&S, DFDS via ZENFreight, and construction-focused fleets under eFREIGHT 2030.
– Megawatt charging infrastructure is being rolled out at scale, with pioneering public hubs and large depot‑based solutions under development, paving the way for broader fleet electrification.
– Policy and fiscal support continue to play a pivotal role in enabling the transition with grants extended and expanded to reduce upfront costs, while programmes like ZEHID drive innovation and investment in zero‑emission logistics.
