UK Government’s Onshore Wind Strategy Sparks Green Energy Momentum

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
The UK Government has unveiled a bold onshore wind strategy aimed at unleashing up to 10 GW of clean power and creating as many as 45,000 jobs, marking a significant step in the nation’s net zero journey. Under the new framework, communities hosting onshore wind developments will benefit directly through annual payments of £5,000 per megawatt supporting projects from local libraries to energy bill relief schemes. This move reflects a growing recognition that energy policy must deliver both environmental and social dividends. Energy Saving Trust welcomes the emphasis on local empowerment and acknowledges that a one‑size‑fits‑all approach is no longer sufficient in building a truly inclusive green energy economy. What’s more, this initiative reinforces the government’s ambitions outlined in its Clear Power by 2030 plan, underlining the central role of onshore wind in the UK’s decarbonised energy future.
Adding to the momentum, the UK Net Zero Business Census 2025 has launched the largest survey of its kind, tracking private sector progress in the race to net zero. Endorsed by the Net Zero Council and delivered in partnership with leading business networks, this year’s Census seeks to scale insights and support that policymakers and industry can use to accelerate decarbonisation. The initiative builds on a pilot version that revealed widespread barriers including high costs, uncertainty over regulation, and infrastructure limitations issues that persist across industries despite growing ambition. Notably, 73% of organisations regard net zero as a strategic priority, while 65% aim to achieve it by 2050, and 48% hope to reach it before 2035. These insights will help shape future policy interventions and support mechanisms that address real‑world implementation hurdles.
Meanwhile, industry voices are pressing for a just and equitable transition. A coalition of five major business groups recently called for policymaking that balances ambition with accountability, delivery, opportunity and cost. They argue that net zero policies must be fair and inclusive, ensuring that both businesses and workers play meaningful roles in the green transition not merely in environmental terms, but in socio‑economic ones too. This appeal highlights the need for frameworks that support sustainable growth and safeguard against unintended consequences.
What this means:
The government’s onshore wind strategy not only boosts renewable energy deployment but also redefines how communities participate in the net zero transition by linking financial benefits to local ownership and engagement.
The Net Zero Business Census provides priceless real‑time data from businesses and flags where immediate government action could ease barriers particularly for SMEs making net zero more tangible and integrated into day‑to‑day operations.
The call from business groups for a just transition reminds us that environmental progress must go hand in hand with social fairness and economic inclusivity putting people at the heart of decarbonisation efforts.
