UK Government Unveils Ambitious Solar Roadmap to Supercharge Net Zero Goals

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
The UK Solar Taskforce has released a landmark Solar Roadmap detailing a path to almost 50 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030 more than double current levels. As of now, the nation has around 18 GW of capacity. The roadmap emphasises rooftop solar as central to this expansion, requiring just 0.4 percent of UK land for ground‑mounted arrays. It also anticipates the sector could support roughly 35,000 jobs by the end of the decade. The government plans to form a joint Solar Council with industry to drive the agenda forward. Installing rooftop solar is projected to save households around £500 annually.
Alongside the solar roadmap, the Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 7 (AR7) has been announced, unlocking over £1 billion annually for offshore wind projects, including floating offshore wind, from 2028 to 2033. The Offshore Wind (Pot 3) portion allocates £900 million per year, while Floating Offshore Wind (Pot 4) receives £180 million annually through 2031/32. A Clean Industry Bonus, worth £20.1 million per GW, has also been introduced to nurture a domestic supply chain. These measures reinforce the UK’s decarbonisation strategy and support the broader net zero agenda.
What This Means:
This dual‑pronged effort marks a significant policy milestone. The solar roadmap clears a path for mass rooftop solar deployment, reducing land-use conflicts and empowering households to generate clean energy while saving on bills. The anticipated job creation and solar deployment trajectory suggest a strong economic and societal incentive for uptake.
The AR7 funding further strengthens renewable power generation capacity, especially offshore wind, while incentivising clean technology innovation and supply chain growth through the Clean Industry Bonus. Together with rooftop solar expansion, this move helps shore up the UK’s energy independence, supports industrial jobs, and aligns with net zero targets by slashing emissions from electricity generation.
