UK Freight Sector Accelerates Green Transition with Trailblazing Deployments

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

In recent weeks, the UK logistics and freight sector has seen a surge of decarbonisation initiatives, with operators across road and rail deploying zero‑emission vehicles and infrastructure at scale.

Universal Courier Logistical Services (UCLS) has added 33 Renault E‑Tech Master electric panel vans, taking its electric fleet to 48 vehicles, to support a new zero‑emission home delivery contract across the North of England operating 700 daily ‘final mile’ routes across Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds. This order marks a significant expansion of UCLS’s sustainability efforts. Published 4 December 2025.

Royal Mail has rolled out its first eight 42‑tonne DAF XD 350E electric heavy goods vehicles at Midlands and North West parcel hubs. Supported by ABB’s T360 high‑performance chargers capable of adding 60 miles of range in under 15 minutes this move will save around one thousand tonnes of carbon emissions annually and reduce operational costs. The rollout forms part of Royal Mail’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy and leverages Electric Freightway’s high‑speed charging infrastructure backed by over £100 million in investment. Published 1 December 2025.

Meanwhile, on Britain’s rail network, Network Rail, in collaboration with Freightliner and GeoPura, has transported hydrogen for the first time hauling gas containers from Doncaster to High Marnham via Tuxford Test Tracks. This event also showcased a re‑engineered hydrogen‑powered shunting locomotive and other hydrogen‑powered support vehicles. The demonstration took place adjacent to HyMarnham Power, the UK’s largest green hydrogen production facility. Published 8 December 2025.

In Wales, freight forwarder FSEW is partnering with Zenobē to create a new Low Carbon Freight Hub in Cardiff. Zenobē will provide charging infrastructure—initially four 400 kW DC chargers—powered entirely by renewable energy, with scalability within a newly approved 2.5‑acre open access site. The hub aims to become one of the UK’s first low‑carbon freight logistics centres, scheduled for completion by January 2026. Published 19 June 2025.

Scotland has seen the launch of ScotCharge a consortium formed by leading electrification firms including Fleete, VEV, and Dynamon to decarbonise the nation’s 36,500‑strong HGV fleet. Backed by £2 million from Transport Scotland’s HGV Market Readiness Fund, ScotCharge aims to produce a clear roadmap for electrification. The consortium’s initial business case is expected in December 2025, with a full report due by March 2026. Published 12 November 2025.

In Liverpool, as part of the ZENFreight programme under the government’s ZEHID initiative, DFDS has deployed its first electric HGV an 8‑strong Volvo FM Electric fleet operating on a closed‑loop route between Merseyside and Liverpool Port. The site includes four charging bays delivering 360 kWh each, allowing full charge in two hours and enabling three to four cycles per day. This is the first live infrastructure under ZENFreight’s dual‐focus on hydrogen fuel cell and battery‑electric freight. Published 21 October 2025.

Across the UK, zero‑emission HGV registrations surged 59.1% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with 183 units registered reflecting a growing market share of around 1%. Despite the progress, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders notes that uptake must accelerate sharply to meet the UK’s target of zero‑emission sales for HGVs up to 26 tonnes by 2035. Published 18 August 2025.

These developments underscore the rapid traction of green logistics across the UK, showcasing public‑ and private‑sector collaboration, strategic infrastructure deployment, and fleet electrification across road and rail sectors.

What this means:
– The logistics and freight sector is transitioning rapidly toward zero‑emission operations, driven by major fleet deployments and infrastructure build‑outs.
– Collaborative consortia like ScotCharge and ZENFreight, supported by government funding and innovation programmes, are critical in scaling solutions sustainably.
– Hydrogen freight is advancing beyond pilot, with live transport of the fuel on rail and dual fuel innovation emerging as viable long‑haul options.
– Infrastructure deployment—from high‑power charging hubs to local renewable charging sites is now matching vehicle readiness, enabling scalability.
– To meet net‑zero targets, momentum must be sustained, including accelerating registration rates of zero‑emission HGVs, expanding renewable hub development, and supporting SMEs in electrifying operations.
