UK Fleets Accelerate Net‑Zero Journey with Data‑Driven and Shared EV Charging Solutions

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.

In the UK’s net-zero transport sector, pivotal strides are being made to support fleet electrification through smart software, collaborative infrastructure, and government-backed grant schemes. Key developments are shaping a more efficient and accessible path toward zero-emission operations for commercial transport.

One of the most significant advancements comes from a partnership between Webfleet and Dynamon. Together, they have launched a fleet decarbonisation service combining telematics data and optimisation tools to deliver tailored, data-driven reports. These reports guide fleet operators on transitioning to electric vehicles, determining optimal charger deployment, evaluating vehicle replacement strategies, and analysing total cost of ownership all at approximately 80% lower cost compared to traditional consultancy methods. This integration makes carbon reduction both affordable and actionable.

Similarly, Dynamon’s software collaboration with Transport for London (TfL) has demonstrated impactful real-world potential. An analysis revealed that around half of TfL’s support fleet comprising nearly 962 vehicles could transition to electric immediately without altering schedules or routes. This shift is achievable via establishment of dedicated charging infrastructure at key sites, marking a significant milestone in fleet electrification.

Beyond technological tools, there is growing momentum in sharing and expanding EV charging infrastructure. First Charge a depot charging service initially launched by First Bus has become available across the Allstar payment network. This enables low-cost depot charging accessible to fleets across the UK, leveraging high-powered and secure facilities originally operated by bus depots.

Building on this, First Bus has expanded its shared charging offering. Through its First Charge initiative, not only are businesses and fleet operators supported, but private EV drivers now also have access—starting with the Caledonia depot in Glasgow, recently opened to the general public.

Another innovative shared solution comes via Paua’s ‘Paua Share’ scheme. In collaboration with First Bus, this allows third-party commercial fleets to use ultra-rapid chargers located at bus depots. These high-power chargers, offering capacities between 150kW to 350kW and powered by renewable energy, are made available across 11 strategic UK sites. The approach reduces infrastructure costs for fleet users and maximises existing depot assets.

On the funding front, support is being accelerated by a new depot charging grants scheme. Set up in partnership by Cenex and the Energy Saving Trust, the government-backed initiative opened in July 2025. Fleet operators of vans, coaches, and HGVs can claim reimbursement of up to 75% of charger installation costs with a maximum of £1 million per applicant available until funding is exhausted or November 28, 2025. This support is aimed at reducing commercial transport’s significant contribution to domestic CO₂ emissions by enabling depot electrification.

Together, these developments signal a profound shift. Fleet managers now have access to smarter tools for planning, increased access to charging infrastructure, and financial incentives to lower barriers for electrification.

What this means:
Combining strategic software tools, collaborative infrastructure models, and government grant schemes is driving tangible progress toward net-zero commercial transport in the UK. Fleet operators can deploy electrified solutions faster and more cost-effectively, public and private charging assets are being shared efficiently, and funding is helping to de-risk the transition.
