UK FASTA Agri‑Tech Boosts Nature Protection through Sustainable Farming MRV

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

A new UK‑based initiative now offers hope for both climate mitigation and biodiversity through precision farming tools. The Food Agriculture System Technology Accelerator (FASTA), launched on 1 December 2025 by the UK Agri‑Tech Centre in partnership with the Carbon Trust, aims to catalyse the scaling of Measurement, Reporting and Verification systems in agriculture. These systems are designed to enable credible sustainability claims, unlock finance and drive measurable progress toward Net Zero by providing data transparency for emissions tracking, impact validation and smarter decision‑making on farms. This sector accounts for approximately 10 percent of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, underlining the relevance of these tools for emission reduction and environmental integrity.

Registrations for participation in the FASTA programme opened from 6 to 23 January 2026, offering UK innovators bespoke expert support from industry stakeholders and access to investors to bring tested MRV solutions closer to market. These MRV technologies are not only vital for supporting Net Zero ambitions but could also underpin interventions that restore ecosystems and support biodiversity by enabling evidence‑based sustainable land management.

At the global level, frameworks that interlink biodiversity goals with climate action are growing in prominence. The Kunming‑Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted on 19 December 2022, establishes visionary targets to conserve and restore 30 percent of the planet’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2050, with 23 interim targets for 2030. While greenhouse gas emissions are not explicitly mentioned, the preservation of natural carbon sinks such as forests, wetlands, soils and oceans is essential in curbing emissions from land‑use change. Conserving and restoring these ecosystems supports carbon storage and strengthens resilience in the natural climate system.

Together, FASTA’s focus on actionable farming innovation and the global biodiversity targets point to a coherent vision: sustainable land management must simultaneously drive climate performance and nature stewardship. Farmers equipped with robust MRV systems can align operational decisions with local biodiversity enhancement and landscape restoration, contributing to broader environmental goals.

What this means:
FASTA’s support for emissions tracking technologies marks a practical step toward decarbonising UK agriculture, while aligning land management with climate and biodiversity outcomes. The Kunming‑Montreal framework offers a broader guidepost, reminding us that restoring and preserving ecosystems is vital for the Net Zero journey. Linking local innovation with global policy brings us closer to a future where farming supports both people and planet.
