UK Farming Tech Boosts Nature and Net Zero Ambitions

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
A new programme aimed at integrating nature‑positive agriculture with net zero objectives has been launched under the Food Agriculture System Technology Accelerator (FASTA), a collaborative effort from the UK Agri‑Tech Centre and the Carbon Trust. Announced on 1 December 2025, the initiative focuses on scaling Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems to quantify environmental impacts in farming. These systems are pivotal in supporting credible sustainability claims, unlocking investment, and driving tangible reductions in agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions, which account for approximately 10 % of the UK’s total GHG footprint.
Registration for participation opened between 6 and 23 January 2026, inviting UK‑based innovators to bring their MRV solutions closer to market with bespoke technical and commercial support, including access to investors. This represents a significant step toward embedding robust environmental accountability in the agricultural sector.
What makes FASTA noteworthy from an environment and biodiversity perspective is its focus on enhancing the transparency and verifiability of environmental impacts. Accurate data via MRV systems enables quantification of carbon emissions, soil health, biodiversity enhancements, and water usage, supporting smarter decision‑making. While MRV’s primary emphasis lies in emissions tracking, its capabilities can support broader nature‑positive outcomes by measuring co‑benefits of sustainable land management such as biodiversity gains, soil organic matter improvements, and habitat restoration.
The alignment of carbon accountability with nature outcomes may further incentivise regenerative farming practices, agroforestry, enhanced field margins, and wetland restoration all critical for reversing biodiversity decline. MRV thus plays a dual role: enabling net zero progress while supporting ecosystem resilience.
What this means:
FASTA’s launch marks a strategic shift for UK agriculture by prioritising measurable environmental performance. Scaling MRV technologies will be essential in mobilising investment, guiding policy, and empowering farmers to demonstrate sustainability credentials. As MRV matures, it has the potential to mainstream biodiversity outcomes alongside carbon reductions, helping integrate nature‑positive approaches into commercial farming.
