UK Enables Electric Truck Discounts and Fleet Innovation for Net–Zero Transport

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
The UK government has rolled out a major incentive boost for hauling operators, offering discounts of up to £120,000 on electric trucks through an expanded Plug‑in Truck Grant. With an additional £18 million allocated and the scheme extended until March 2026, smaller trucks (4.25 to 12 tonnes) can qualify for savings of up to £20,000; mid‑sized trucks (12 to 18 tonnes) up to £60,000; and larger trucks (18 to 26 tonnes) up to £80,000. This initiative forms part of a wider £318 million green freight package aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of heavy goods transport
Beyond truck incentives, several technological and operational innovations are transforming the road to net‑zero transport. Fleet operators are gaining new tools to manage the electrification transition, such as charge point management platforms tailored to early EV pilots. One of the leading systems, FPS Operate Core, integrates vehicle, charger and e‑fuel card data through a single interface. It is already used by major UK fleets including Wincanton, John Lewis and the Welch Group to optimise real‑time charging and vehicle operations.
Meanwhile, depot charging is evolving rapidly. An all‑in‑one solution designed for fleet depots, known as Plug Me In Go, has launched across the UK. It combines hardware, intelligent control software, flexible funding and 24/7 support. The system aims to streamline charge point installation and operation, maintain reliability, and minimise downtime for fleets shifting to electric vehicles.
Smart charging, cloud‑connected home integration and AI are also key parts of the emerging landscape. Rightcharge has partnered with Cord Power Technologies to deliver seamless home charging integration for fleets. This includes smart chargers communicating directly with a central payment platform, simplifying reimbursement, improving data tracking and supporting future‑ready energy optimisation with solar and battery systems. The same company has also enhanced its payment platform with predictive AI to tackle home‑charging data inconsistencies, providing proactive issue detection and more accurate reimbursement.
Innovative battery technology offers yet more gains. A breakthrough system using ‘Dectravalve’ maintains optimal cell temperature across EV battery packs, slashing charging times by up to 68%. For example, a typical 30‑minute 10–80% charge on a 350 kW charger could drop to just 10 minutes. The system also improves efficiency yielding up to 10% more real‑world range and enhances battery safety and lifespan.
In infrastructure terms, public charging is expanding at pace. The UK has surpassed 100,000 public EV charging points, with rapid and ultra‑rapid chargers now accounting for nearly a quarter of that total. One new charger is being added approximately every 13 minutes across the country. The first quarter of 2025 saw especially rapid expansion. More than 3,100 new charge points were added in Q1 alone, bringing the national total to around 76,840 a 29% year‑on‑year increase. Ultra‑rapid devices (150 kW and above) grew by almost 66%, now making up 22% of all installations nationally. The trend indicates a shift towards destination and en‑route charging with higher‑power hubs becoming standard.
What this means:
This wave of developments signals a maturing UK net‑zero transport ecosystem across several fronts. Substantial grants for electric trucks reduce cost barriers for freight operators, while depot and home charging innovations, alongside smart payment and AI tools, simplify the transition for fleets. Dramatic reductions in charge time and improvements in battery performance further strengthen the case for electrification, supporting operational efficiency and lowering total cost of ownership. Finally, surging public charging infrastructure—especially ultra‑rapid hubs—builds confidence among commercial and private users alike, removing access constraints.
