UK Electric Transport Accelerates with Ultra‑Rapid Charge Expansion

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
The UK’s electric transport revolution is charging ahead as public and fleet EV infrastructure grows significantly across the country. Recent data shows that the public charging network reached approximately 86,000 devices across nearly 44,200 locations by the end of October 2025, marking a 22% year‑on‑year expansion. Rapid and ultra‑rapid chargers (50 kW+) saw strong gains, with 378 new units added in October alone and ultra‑rapid installations growing by nearly 50% over the previous year.
Charging hubs sites with at least six rapid or ultra‑rapid points also increased to 705, a 31% rise since the end of 2024. New record sites are emerging to meet demand: at Moto Knutsford Services on the M6, Gridserve’s new Super Hub provides 24 ultra‑rapid bays (350 kW–360 kW), delivering up to 100 miles of range in under ten minutes
Innovations are proliferating. Gridserve has introduced its most powerful public charger, the ABB A400, capable of delivering 400 kW and equipped with dual CCS ports for simultaneous charging, plus a 32‑inch touchscreen interface. Deployed at key locations including Centaurus Park in Bristol, it promises fast, reliable charging and advanced uptime management.
Meanwhile, Moto has launched its in‑house Moto Charge ultra‑rapid network at the Toddington North motorway site. The 400 kW units, featuring modern design and wide payment options, represent a milestone as Moto becomes a charge point operator itself.
New hubs are also under development. InstaVolt has secured a 40‑year lease for a 30‑unit ultra‑rapid superhub on the A303 in Wiltshire, complete with café and farm‑shop facilities, solar and battery systems. Construction begins in August 2025 with operations expected by spring 2026. Fastned received approval to convert an Aberdeen warehouse into the UK’s first indoor drive‑thru charging hub, offering 12 ultra‑rapid 400 kW bays and amenities, set to open in winter 2026.
Freight and logistics sectors are also electrifying. Fleete has broken ground on a 5 MW EV charging hub at Port of Tilbury, expected to start in December 2025. With 16 rapid chargers, it could become the UK’s largest dedicated facility for electric HGVs and commercial fleets. In Wales, FSEW is partnering with Zenobē to create a Low Carbon Freight Hub in Cardiff, featuring four 400 kW DC chargers and smart charging management on 2.5 acres of open access land
Meanwhile, the ZENFreight consortium has began deploying its first electric HGV under the ZEHID programme. DFDS has entered service with a Volvo FM Electric eHGV at Liverpool’s Sandhills depot with four 360 kWh charging bays. It completes three to four delivery cycles daily and demonstrates real-world viability for electric freight operations
Policy support is easing infrastructure roll‑out. The Government has cut bureaucratic barriers to EV socket installation, significantly simplifying planning and expanding grant schemes like the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant (EVCG), Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS), and On‑Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS). These moves help accelerate both public and workplace charging expansion
What this means:
There is a clear shift from incremental growth to momentous scale‑up in EV charging across the UK. From densely populated motorway rest areas to freight ports and metropolitan depots, ultra‑rapid infrastructure is being deployed at speed. Innovations like 400 kW+ chargers and smart depot grids are addressing range anxiety while serving commercial transport needs. Policy easing and funding continue to underpin this expansion.
The result is a more resilient, accessible, and customer‑centric transport electrification ecosystem vital for delivering net‑zero ambitions in the coming decade.
