UK Accelerates Solar and Grid Investment to Drive Net Zero by 2030

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

The UK government has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap to ramp up solar energy deployment, aiming for nearly 50 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030, a substantial increase from its current 18 GW. The plan projects that solar expansion could support around 35,000 jobs by 2030 and deliver annual savings of approximately £500 for the typical household.

In parallel, the energy regulator Ofgem has introduced a new Advanced Procurement Mechanism (APM), allowing transmission network operators to secure essential grid equipment and services years in advance. This change is designed to reduce supply chain delays, control costs, attract investment, and speed up grid expansion to support clean power needs by 2030. Ofgem’s move comes amid the necessity of delivering 80 major grid projects to meet the country’s clean energy ambitions.

This dual approach addresses both supply and infrastructure. By aligning solar growth with enhanced grid delivery, the UK is unlocking a faster, more resilient decarbonisation trajectory. Crucially, the Solar Roadmap also places a strong emphasis on tackling planning barriers, grid bottlenecks, supply chain constraints and skills shortages.

What this means:
– The UK’s push towards nearly 50 GW of solar capacity by 2030 marks a transformational shift, promising substantial economic, environmental and societal gains.
– Job creation through this initiative could be widespread, with up to 35,000 new roles emerging in the solar industry.
– With expected household bill savings, solar also contributes to affordability in the energy transition.
– Ofgem’s APM tackles a major structural challenge by enabling earlier procurement of grid infrastructure, ensuring that renewable capacity additions are effectively integrated into the network.
– Together, these measures reflect a joined‑up strategy that balances the deployment of clean power with equally robust infrastructure delivery.
