UK Accelerates Green Logistics with Clean Truck Grants and Electric Trials

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.

In a significant boost to green freight in the UK, the Government has announced an extra £18 million for the Plug‑in Truck Grant, enabling fleet operators and hauliers to access discounts of up to £120,000 when purchasing new electric trucks. This grant, running until March 2026, forms part of a wider £318 million package supporting green freight solutions. The scaled grants vary by vehicle size up to £20,000 for smaller trucks, £60,000 for mid-sized vehicles, £80,000 for larger trucks, and £120,000 for the largest lorries offering much‑needed financial certainty to businesses planning their transition to zero-emission fleets.

At the same time, major private-sector actors are stepping up electrification efforts in logistics. Royal Mail has rolled out eight DAF XD 350E electric HGVs between its Midlands and North West parcel hubs. Supported by ABB high‑speed chargers, these vehicles are expected to save around 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, while helping Royal Mail progress towards its net‑zero target by 2040. Wincanton, meanwhile, has welcomed 24 new electric trucks sourced from DAF, Volvo, and Renault to its fleet in a key move towards net‑zero by 2040. This deployment, supported by depot charging installations across several UK locations, is projected to reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by approximately 2,400 tonnes annually.

Innovation in hydrogen logistics is also gathering momentum. ZENFreight has added John G Russell (Transport) Ltd to its consortium as a trial partner for hydrogen fuel cell (HFCEV) and battery electric HGVs. This includes a first-of-its-kind 6×2 vehicle configuration in the UK, with depot-based electric charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure to be established in Coatbridge. These trials will deliver real-world data to inform the broader rollout of zero-emission heavy goods vehicles.

Complementing private sector efforts, the Sustainable Urban Freight Association (SUFA) has launched to champion ultra‑low emission deliveries. Initiated at the Fleet Electrification Forum, SUFA brings together a diverse membership base from national freight operators to cargo bike services advocating for clean vehicle transitions in urban environments. Funded by a health charity and offering one year’s free membership, SUFA aims to engage with government, support research and networking, and facilitate policy change to ease the shift to green freight across cities.

What this means:
The UK is now driving forward with a fleet of complementary measures financial incentives, real-world pilot projects, and industry collaboration to accelerate green logistics. Government funding is signalising strong commitment to electrification, while businesses are gaining vital insights through trial deployments. SUFA’s formation underscores the growing recognition that it will take collective action and coordinated advocacy to ensure net‑zero freight becomes the standard, especially as urban delivery pressures continue to rise.
