UK Accelerates Green Freight: Charging Hubs, Grants and Zero‑Emission Trials

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
Main Article Body
The UK logistics and freight sector is making significant strides towards net‑zero, with major infrastructure investments, fleet electrification pilots, and expanded government funding accelerating decarbonisation across road and rail transport.
Construction is underway for the UK’s largest dedicated electric HGV charging hub at the Port of Tilbury. The £1 million was awarded through the Thames Freeport seed capital programme to fund a 5 MW commercial EV charging station. It will include 12 ultra‑fast chargers delivering up to 360 kW each and four via the Voltempo Megawatt Charging System, designed for rapid turnaround of heavy goods vehicles. The hub’s December 2025 completion will support 6,000 daily HGV movements and facilitate fleet electrification at scale.
Complementing infrastructure developments, the Government has injected an additional £18 million into the Plug‑in Truck Grant for 2025/26, offering discounts of up to £120,000 on new electric trucks. This follows a broader £318 million green freight plan aimed at reducing upfront costs and supporting the transition to electric fleets. In tandem, a consultation on phasing out non‑zero emission HGV sales by 2040 was launched, providing a regulatory roadmap for the industry.
Trials comparing hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric HGVs are progressing. The ZENFreight consortium, driven by Dynamon and including operators like DFDS and John G Russell, has begun deploying vehicles under the government’s ZEHID programme. Russell’s fleet now includes three MAN battery electric HGVs and three Scania hydrogen‑electric fuel cell HGVs. The initiative also includes charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at depots.
Heavy construction materials logistics is also seeing electrification gains. Tarmac has announced its rollout of eHGVs for delivering cement, concrete and aggregates across London and the South East. Supported by the ZEHID programme along with Innovate UK funding, the fleet will operate alongside a new charging network. This includes a 250 kW DC charger in Paddington and a Voltempo HyperCharger Megawatt Charging System in Northfleet capable of dynamically charging six trucks. The network will also interlink with the Port of Tilbury hub
On the innovation front, Aegis Energy has secured major investment to establish the first clean, multi‑energy refuelling hubs for commercial vehicles. A £100 million commitment from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners will support a network of five initial stations by end of 2027, with the first opening in early 2026 in locations such as Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby and Towcester. To encourage early adoption, Aegis has launched ‘Aegis Trailblazers’, offering discounted charging, networking opportunities, and influence in infrastructure planning.
In the realm of final‑mile delivery, Universal Courier Logistical Services (UCLS) has added 33 Renault E‑Tech Master electric vans, bringing its electric fleet to 48. These will serve major cities in the North of England under a zero‑emission home delivery contract, significantly advancing low‑carbon logistics in urban areas
What This Means:
The UK logistics sector is advancing from pilot to delivery. New charging hubs, fiscal incentives, and multi‑energy infrastructures are converging to support zero‑emission fleets. Government funding ensures that high‑cost transitions become viable, while demonstrator projects validate the practicality of electric and hydrogen solutions at scale.
As these efforts continue, the road freight sector is set to transform reducing air pollution, strengthening grid capacity, and establishing the UK as a leader in sustainable transport.
