UK Accelerates Climate Action with Clean Energy Plan and Innovation Funding

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

The UK Government has unveiled its Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan, published alongside a new Industrial Strategy, aiming to secure the nation’s place as a global clean energy superpower. The plan sets ambitious goals: to double annual investment in the clean energy sector by 2035, fast‑track grid infrastructure upgrades, and grow a skilled workforce capable of driving the low‑carbon transition. The strategy includes a £1 billion Clean Energy Supply Chain Fund supported by the £27.8 billion National Wealth Fund, and Great British Energy will lead the initiative to deliver local supply chain benefits and job growth across the country. Additionally, the plan promises reforms to speed up grid connection, backed by an extra £10 billion a year in transmission spending between 2025 and 2030. This multifaceted approach positions the UK to deploy more offshore wind, solar, hydrogen, carbon capture, fusion and battery storage. What’s more, the strategy prioritises strong wages, trade union representation, and regional employment, intended to spur tens of billions of private investment and bolster energy affordability and security. These measures mark a decisive step to align the UK’s economy with its net‑zero ambitions and to position clean energy as a driver for national renewal.

What this means:
This strategy lays out a clear, funded roadmap to deliver deep decarbonisation across energy sectors by empowering domestic clean energy industries. By combining substantial public investment with workforce development and infrastructure reform, it offers a sustainable template for achieving net zero while supporting growth, resilience and equitable transition.
