Top Tips: When to Charge Over August Bank Holiday

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

As the August bank holiday approaches, BP Pulse is ringing the alarm bell for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, foreseeing a surge in charging demand during this bustling weekend. With a predicted increase of 5% in charging activity, it’s essential for drivers to strategise their charging needs to avoid the rush and ensure a smooth journey.

Drawing insights from last year’s data, BP Pulse anticipates delivering enough energy to power an astounding 2.75 million EV miles over this bank holiday. This significant statistic underscores the growing reliance on electric vehicles and the necessity for robust charging infrastructure, especially during peak travel times.

According to BP Pulse’s analysis, Friday and Saturday are set to be the busiest days, with peak charging demand likely occurring between 6 PM and 8 PM. Additionally, late mornings, particularly from 10 AM to 11 AM, along with early mornings from 8 AM to 9 AM, are expected to see higher traffic at charging stations. With these predictions in mind, BP Pulse is strongly advising drivers to plan their charging stops wisely.

Valerio Ferro, the General Manager at BP Pulse UK, highlighted the increasing popularity of EVs during this peak travel period. “The August bank holiday is always a busy time on the roads, and with EVs becoming more mainstream, we’re anticipating higher demand for EV charging than ever before. However, there’s a silver lining. The fast charging infrastructure has expanded significantly over the past year, and BP Pulse’s network is readily available across the UK, allowing EV drivers to recharge their batteries conveniently,” he stated.

To make the most of this holiday weekend and avoid unnecessary delays, BP Pulse is offering top tips for EV drivers:

  • Plan Your Route: Ensure you have identified your main charging stations as well as backup locations. This strategy will help you sidestep potential delays.
  • Charge During Off-Peak Hours: Whenever possible, opt to charge during early mornings or late evenings, as these times generally see lower demand.
  • Utilise Ultra-Fast Chargers: Depending on your vehicle, ultra-fast chargers can provide up to 80% charge in just about 20 minutes, allowing you to hit the road again quickly.
  • Maintain Battery Levels: Keeping your battery between 20-80% can optimise charging speed and minimise wait times.
  • Leverage Real-Time Availability Tools: Use apps and tools that provide real-time updates on charger availability to monitor queues and status changes.

As we gear up for this bank holiday, it’s crucial for EV drivers to stay informed and prepared. The growing network of charging stations is a testament to the UK’s commitment to supporting electric vehicle adoption. With a little foresight and planning, you can make the most of your travels while contributing to a greener future.

Stay charged and enjoy your bank holiday weekend!
