Sustainable Urban Freight Association Debuts at Fleet Electrification

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

Today marks a significant milestone in the quest for cleaner, more efficient freight solutions as the Sustainable Urban Freight Association (SUFA) officially launched at the Fleet Electrification Forum. This innovative trade association is set to unite freight providers under a common vision of ultra-low emission deliveries and services, a crucial step as cities across the UK implement new measures to tackle the pressing issues of congestion and air pollution.

The establishment of SUFA comes at a time when urban areas are increasingly prioritising sustainability and environmental health. By advocating for innovative solutions and essential policy changes, SUFA aims to facilitate the transition to clean vehicles within this evolving regulatory landscape. The association is dedicated to promoting collaborative efforts among freight operators, ensuring that all stakeholders—from large national companies to small local businesses—can contribute to the shift towards a more sustainable freight system.

One of SUFA’s primary objectives is to engage actively with policymakers, conduct pioneering research, and foster networking opportunities. By focusing on these areas, the association will provide robust support to freight operators eager to invest in electric vehicles, cargo bikes, and multimodal freight solutions. This initiative is particularly timely, as the demand for delivery services continues to rise, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the freight sector.

The launch of SUFA is made possible through the generous funding of health charity Impact on Urban Health, which has allowed the association to offer free membership for the first year. This unique opportunity encourages a diverse range of members to join the movement towards cleaner urban freight solutions. Currently, SUFA boasts 18 founding members, representing a wide array of firms that utilise mixed fleets, fully electric vehicles, and cargo bikes. These member organisations include prominent names such as Colchester eCargo, DHL, DPD, Evri, Ocado, and Thames Clipper, among others.

At the helm of SUFA are three co-chairs: Kirsten Zoe Smith from Recorra, Lee Pugh from Colchester eCargo, and Edoardo del Bino from Orkestro. Each brings a wealth of experience and a shared commitment to transforming the freight sector for the better.

Kirsten Zoe Smith, the Net Zero Lead at Recorra and co-chair of SUFA, emphasised the critical timing of the association’s launch: “Local authorities are increasingly exploring ways to reduce congestion within urban areas, yet the demand for delivery services is greater than ever. Our network supports measures to tackle air pollution, but it is equally essential to address the systemic challenges associated with adopting clean vehicles. Our ambition is for SUFA to lead the charge towards clean freight in a manner that supports businesses, protects the environment, and enhances daily life in our cities.”

Echoing this sentiment, Lee Pugh, the Founder of Colchester eCargo and fellow co-chair of SUFA, highlighted the association’s potential to accelerate decarbonisation in the sector. “This association has a real opportunity to speed up decarbonisation in the sector. SUFA is bringing together innovators across the industry who are genuinely committed to cleaner deliveries. We will advocate for freight solutions that maximise efficiency, including alternative modes of freight, as urban landscapes continue to evolve. By transforming how we transport goods and services through our cities, we can create a freight system that benefits people, profit, and the planet.”

Edoardo del Bino, the Founder of Orkestro and the third co-chair of SUFA, is optimistic about the collaborative potential of this new association. “I firmly believe that better collaboration can help the sector achieve its sustainability goals. SUFA will facilitate this by creating opportunities for knowledge sharing, networking, and policy interventions that support fleet decarbonisation. Our collective voice will be instrumental in guiding the industry towards net zero, ensuring that green freight becomes the standard practice across the board.”

The Sustainable Urban Freight Association’s launch at the Fleet Electrification Forum is seen as a timely response to the well-documented challenges facing the sustainable freight sector. SUFA will serve as a vital body to deliver advocacy, guidance, and best practices that are essential for ensuring that last-mile deliveries and urban freight can successfully decarbonise. The association’s plans to support freight businesses in their journey towards decarbonisation are crucial, especially in recognising the financial burden that logistics firms face during this transition.

As the industry moves forward, it is imperative that stakeholders collaborate to provide the necessary support for a just transition to sustainable freight solutions. The launch of SUFA signifies a commitment to this collaborative approach, and it is welcomed by many within the sector as a beacon of hope for the future of urban freight.

In conclusion, the establishment of the Sustainable Urban Freight Association is an exciting development for the freight sector, one that promises to not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute significantly to the reduction of air pollution and congestion in urban areas. With a dedicated group of founding members and co-chairs, SUFA is poised to lead the charge towards a cleaner, greener future for urban freight. As we continue to navigate the complexities of decarbonisation and sustainability, SUFA stands ready to advocate for innovative solutions that benefit businesses, communities, and the environment alike.

We look forward to following SUFA’s progress and the impacts it will undoubtedly have in shaping the future of urban freight in the UK. Together, let us champion a movement that prioritises sustainability and innovation in the freight sector, ensuring that the path to net zero is accessible and achievable for all.
