RWE’s Pembroke Battery Project Delivers Energy Storage and Biodiversity Gains

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
RWE has committed £200 million to develop a 700 MWh battery energy storage facility at the Pembroke Net Zero Centre in South Wales, marking it among the largest of its kind in the UK. This system will harness 212 lithium‑ion battery containers to deliver up to 350 MW of electricity for two continuous hours, bolstering grid stability amid increasing reliance on intermittent renewables. Beyond energy resilience, the project integrates biodiversity enhancements, including meadow planting, native woodland and scrub planting, and the construction of a sizeable pond to support local wildlife. Such measures underscore an integrated approach where infrastructure development serves ecological restoration as well as energy goals.
What this means:
RWE’s dual‑focus strategy offers a compelling model for net‑zero infrastructure combining energy storage with nature‑based solutions enhances both system resilience and ecological value. As the UK scales up renewable deployment, pairing large‑scale battery assets with habitat restoration delivers emissions support and tangible biodiversity returns. This approach sets a precedent for future developments to embed environmental stewardship at the heart of grid and clean energy expansion.
