Royal Mail and ZENFreight Drive Green Freight Forward

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
In recent months, the UK’s freight sector has taken significant strides in decarbonising heavy goods transport. In early December 2025, Royal Mail deployed eight DAF XD 350E electric HGVs at its Midlands and North West parcel hubs, embarking on replacing diesel‑powered 42‑tonne trucks with zero‑emission alternatives. These vehicles are supported by high‑performance chargers capable of adding up to 60 miles of range in under 15 minutes, helping Royal Mail slash around 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This move forms part of a broader Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme backed by over £100 million of public investment and aligned with Royal Mail’s target to reach net zero by 2040.
Meanwhile, the ZENFreight consortium marked a milestone in October 2025 with the deployment of its first electric Heavy Goods Vehicle. A Volvo FM Electric eHGV began operations on a closed‑loop route between Merseyside’s FMCG fulfilment centre and Liverpool Port. The associated high‑capacity charging site, with four 360 kWh bays allowing full recharge in approximately two hours, was simultaneously commissioned. This deployment underscores practical progress in freight electrification and demonstrates how fleet electrification can be part of everyday logistics operations.
Demand for zero‑emission HGVs is also rising markedly. New registrations climbed by 59.1% during the first half of 2025 year‑on‑year, though they still constituted only around 1% of overall HGV registrations. With approximately 183 units registered in that period, the need for accelerated adoption remains clear if current government targets such as requiring all new HGVs up to 26 tonnes to be zero‑emission by 2035 are to be met.
On the strategy front, the Welch Group unveiled its “12 Pillars of Change” via its TwentyForty innovation platform in September 2025. This initiative brings together industry leaders to define an actionable roadmap for zero‑emission freight by 2040, addressing key challenges such as fragmented policy, infrastructure gaps and fleet realities.
What this means:
Royal Mail’s roll‑out of electric HGVs demonstrates that zero‑emission freight is transitioning from pilot into mainstream application. The introduction of fast‑charging infrastructure at key hubs proves that operational efficiency can align with decarbonisation goals. The ZENFreight deployment further confirms that closed‑loop electrified routes are viable today with the right investment and planning. Yet, despite promising growth in vehicle uptake, zero‑emission trucks remain a minor share of new registrations meaning more ambition and acceleration is essential. Finally, the Welch Group’s industry‑led roadmap initiative reflects a growing recognition that infrastructure, regulatory policy and fleet operations must align to scale decarbonisation effectively.
