Royal Mail and Jolt Drive Forward UK Zero‑Emission Freight and Charging Expansion

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Royal Mail has this December introduced eight new 42-tonne DAF XD 350E electric HGVs at its Midlands and North West parcel hubs, replacing diesel-fuelled middle-mile trucks. These electric vehicles are supported by ABB T360 high-performance chargers, reaching 60 miles of range in under 15 minutes, installed at Daventry and Warrington hubs thanks to collaboration via Electric Freightway. This roll-out is expected to reduce around one thousand tonnes of carbon emissions annually and lower operational costs compared to diesel. As part of its Net Zero by 2040 trajectory, Royal Mail already operates over 7,000 electric vans charged with renewable energy on-site. The Electric Freightway initiative benefits from over £100m in investment, including significant government funding, and will deliver more than 200 ultra-fast chargers nationwide to support over 140 electric trucks. Data from these deployments over the next five years will inform future freight sector decarbonisation strategies.
Meanwhile, in London, Jolt has expanded its innovative ad-funded EV charging model into Greenwich under a new 15-year partnership with the council. The scheme will deliver 30 new chargers offering drivers 7 kWh of free energy daily approximately enough for 30 miles funded through digital advertising revenue. This approach aims to address inequalities in EV access, particularly benefiting residents lacking private driveways.
What this means:
These developments mark significant strides in decarbonising UK road transport across different scales. Royal Mail’s deployment of electric HGVs exemplifies progress in zero-emission freight logistics, leveraging high-speed charging infrastructure and government collaboration to effect tangible carbon reductions. Simultaneously, Jolt’s model represents an inventive step in enabling equitable EV access in urban areas, by offering free charging while ensuring commercial viability.
