Renault’s Next-Gen Clio: Stylish Design & New Powertrains

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as the countdown begins for Renault’s highly anticipated next-generation Clio, recently unveiled at the Munich Motor Show. This iconic supermini, a beloved staple in the automotive landscape for over 35 years and five generations, has achieved remarkable milestones. Notably, it holds the title of the best-selling French car of all time and was also recognised as the best-selling car in Europe during the first half of 2025.

The sixth-generation Renault Clio has undergone a complete redesign, presenting a striking new appearance, enhanced interior space, and versatile powertrains tailored to meet diverse consumer needs. With its market positioning aimed at both urban drivers and long-distance commuters, the new Clio is designed to cater to private customers as well as fleet operators. It will sit alongside the electric Renault 5 and Renault 4 E-Tech models, as well as the Captur B-segment SUV, available in both mild and full hybrid variants, ensuring a comprehensive offering that meets various requirements.

However, UK drivers will have to exercise a little patience, as the new Clio is set to launch in Europe in 2026, while its UK debut is postponed until 2027 due to adjustments made in response to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.

Built upon Renault’s renowned CMF-B platform, the new Clio boasts several enhancements, with the brand’s engineers emphasising their commitment to delivering first-class comfort, superior dynamic handling, and meticulously crafted soundproofing. The dimensions of the new model have been slightly increased, making it longer, taller, and wider than its predecessor. The boot capacity remains impressive at up to 391 litres, depending on the chosen powertrain, while the sill height is now 40mm lower, enhancing accessibility.

The design of the new Clio draws inspiration from last year’s Emblème concept, with Renault proudly declaring that “all the dials have been cranked up” to create what they describe as “the sexiest Clio ever.” This model features a sculpted and sensual silhouette with strong Latin influences, making it a visual delight on the road.

Inside, the focus has shifted towards elevating the quality of the cabin. The use of recycled materials underscores Renault’s commitment to sustainability, while the interior showcases a double V-shaped screen that combines two 10-inch displays with the OpenR Link multimedia system and Google built-in capabilities. The cabin is equipped with a variety of technological features, including up to 29 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), ensuring a modern and safe driving experience. New storage solutions have also been introduced, along with two USB-C sockets at the front, an optional induction charger depending on the trim level, and a 12V socket in the back.

For the UK market, the new Clio will offer two powertrain options. Among them is the impressive full hybrid E-Tech 160hp powertrain, which promises to be both powerful and efficient. Developed in collaboration with Geely through the Horse Powertrain joint venture, this new powertrain combines a 1.8-litre direct-injection Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder combustion engine, two electric motors, and a 1.4 kWh battery featuring an innovative cooling system. The powertrain also includes a clutchless multimode intelligent dog box, providing tailored ratios for enhanced performance.

One of the standout features of the E-Tech 160hp powertrain is its low CO2 emissions, which are just 89g/km. It boasts a remarkable combined-cycle fuel consumption of up to 72.4 mpg, making it significantly more efficient than the full hybrid E-Tech 145hp powertrain from the current generation. In fact, it offers up to 40% less fuel consumption than a conventional petrol engine. The vehicle is capable of driving in electric mode for up to 80% of the time in urban settings, and Renault claims it has an impressive total driving range of 621 miles (1,000km) on a single tank of fuel. Acceleration is also noteworthy, with the new Clio achieving 0 to 62 mph in just 8.5 seconds and offering drivers a choice of four different driving modes.

The entry-level engine option is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged TCe petrol engine that delivers 115hp, a notable increase from the 90hp offered in the current model. This engine generates 190Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, allowing for a 0 to 62 mph time of 10.1 seconds. The entry-level variant also boasts CO2 emissions starting from 114g/km and a combined cycle economy of 56.5 mpg, making it a compelling choice for those mindful of their carbon footprint.

Safety remains a paramount concern, and the new Clio is equipped with an advanced driver monitoring system that utilises an in-car camera to detect signs of tiredness and distraction. Additionally, the vehicle features Safety Score and Safety Coach tools, enhancing the overall safety for both drivers and passengers.

As we look ahead to the arrival of the new Renault Clio, it’s evident that the brand is committed to innovation, sustainability, and meeting the evolving demands of consumers. With its impressive blend of performance, efficiency, and modern design, the sixth-generation Clio is set to continue its legacy as a leader in the supermini segment. Stay tuned for more updates as we follow Renault’s journey towards a greener and more electrified future.
