Polestar 3 Boosts Power and Charging Speed in Tech Upgrade

Exciting news for electric vehicle enthusiasts and sustainability advocates alike: the much-anticipated Polestar 3 has undergone a remarkable transformation that elevates its performance and efficiency to new heights. In a bold move that Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller describes as akin to developing an entirely new car, the brand’s flagship SUV now boasts cutting-edge technology and enhancements that promise to redefine the driving experience.

At the heart of these upgrades lies an innovative 800V electrical architecture, which signifies a significant leap from the previous model’s 400V system. This upgrade is part of Polestar’s SPA2 platform and facilitates an impressive array of capabilities, making the Polestar 3 not just faster but smarter. The implications of this change are profound, as it enables faster charging cycles and improved performance metrics that align perfectly with the growing demand for high-performance electric vehicles.

One of the standout features of the upgraded Polestar 3 is its enhanced DC charging capability. With a peak charging rate of up to 350kW—an increase from the previous 250kW—the SUV can now charge from 10% to 80% in a mere 22 minutes. This represents a remarkable improvement of over 25%, allowing drivers to spend less time tethered to charging stations and more time on the road. In a world where time is of the essence, this technology is bound to be a game changer.

Moreover, the new architecture contributes to an efficiency boost of up to 6%, as per the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) cycle, making the Polestar 3 not only faster but also more eco-friendly. The vehicle is now equipped with advanced lithium-ion batteries supplied by CATL, featuring a 92kWh battery pack for the rear-motor version and a robust 106kWh pack for the dual-motor and Performance variants. The official WLTP range stands at an impressive 375 miles for the rear motor, 394 miles for the dual motor, and 368 miles for the Performance variant.

But the upgrades don’t stop at battery performance. The Polestar 3 also features a newly designed rear motor that significantly increases power across all versions. When paired with an asynchronous front motor, this combination delivers an exhilarating total power output of up to 680hp in the Performance variant. This enhancement not only increases acceleration but also improves the overall driving experience, making every journey more thrilling.

In line with its commitment to innovation, Polestar has introduced a feature where the front motor can disconnect automatically when not in use. This clever adjustment optimises efficiency and extends the vehicle’s range during everyday driving. Additionally, the new rear motor shifts the power balance to favour the rear wheels, enhancing driving dynamics. The Polestar 3 also benefits from updated anti-roll bars and software improvements to the steering system, providing a more responsive and engaging driving experience.

Another significant upgrade is the core computer, which now boasts over eight times the processing power of its predecessor. This enhancement allows for faster and more intelligent management of active safety systems, battery performance, and sensor data. As technology continues to advance, Polestar is ensuring that its vehicles remain at the forefront of innovation, delivering a seamless driving experience that prioritises safety and efficiency.

In a testament to Polestar’s commitment to continuous improvement and customer satisfaction, existing Polestar 3 owners will receive these hardware upgrades as a complimentary retrofit, with work expected to commence in early 2026. In addition to these technical upgrades, the 2026 model year will see the introduction of a new trim level structure for the Polestar 3. The new designations—Rear Motor, Dual Motor, and Performance—replace the previous naming convention, providing clearer distinctions between versions. The entry-level Rear Motor variant will benefit from an optimised battery size, while air suspension remains standard on the Dual Motor and Performance models. Notably, the seatbelt design will also vary between trims, adding an extra layer of differentiation.

The line-up will also feature a revised packaging and options strategy, along with aesthetic updates that include a new Storm exterior colour option, refreshed door text graphics, and updated upholstery and aluminium accents within the cabin. These changes not only enhance the visual appeal of the Polestar 3 but also reinforce its status as a premium electric vehicle.

Matt Galvin, Managing Director of Polestar UK, shared his enthusiasm for the upgraded model, stating, “The response to Polestar 3 has been phenomenal here – so much so that we’ve already sold out of our 2025 model year. This strong demand reflects the growing appetite for premium electric performance in the UK, and we’re excited to continue building on that momentum with the latest iteration of our flagship SUV when it arrives early next year.”

With prices starting at £69,990 for the rear-motor version, £77,990 for the dual-motor variant, and £91,990 for the Performance model, the Polestar 3 is positioned as a competitive option in the premium electric SUV market. As the world shifts towards more sustainable transportation solutions, vehicles like the Polestar 3 are leading the charge, combining performance, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology in a package that appeals to both eco-conscious drivers and performance enthusiasts alike.
