Ofgem Tightens Innovation Funding to Accelerate Net Zero Transition

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

Ofgem has recently unveiled an enhanced approach to its Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), designed to drive the energy sector’s transition to net zero by 2030. The updated process aims to offer innovators more flexibility and a faster route to funding, backed by deeper engagement with stakeholders to streamline access to capital for transformative energy projects. This move comes as part of a broader £450 million fund, in partnership with Innovate UK, under the regulatory framework of RIIO‑2 funding, aimed at accelerating breakthroughs in energy flexibility, AI applications, and grid resilience through advanced technologies. More frequent application cycles are expected to hasten innovation development across the electricity and gas networks.

A key purpose of the fund is to support technologies addressing high energy costs, reducing carbon emissions, and bolstering energy security. Projects previously financed under SIF include advanced energy storage, AI‑driven fault detection systems, and smart circuits enabling more efficient connection of offshore wind capacity to the grid. The recent reforms will enhance the fund’s responsiveness as the system transitions toward greater decentralisation and renewable penetration.

recent survey of 1,000 project professionals across construction, automotive, engineering, and logistics, over half (52%) expressed high confidence that the UK will meet its 2050 net‑zero targets a significant increase from just 31% two years prior.

Together, the streamlining of funding processes and rising industry optimism reflect momentum building behind the UK’s low‑carbon transition. These developments could encourage more innovative solutions to overcome persistent challenges like regulatory uncertainty, infrastructure deficits, and skills gaps. In parallel, the UK Net Zero Business Census 2025 has launched, aiming to track and inform private‑sector decarbonisation efforts. The initiative, endorsed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Net Zero Council and delivered by the UK Business Climate Hub with major business associations, gathers data to support policy and business action.

What this means:
The overhaul of SIF signals a pro‑innovation shift in energy policy, making it easier for novel clean‑energy solutions to secure funding. As the UK ramps up low‑carbon infrastructure amidst growing industry confidence, these changes could catalyse more rapid deployment of renewables, smart grid systems, and resilience technologies. Combined with fresh data from the Net Zero Business Census, policymakers and businesses are better positioned to collaborate on informed, accelerated pathways to net zero.
