New Data Shows Over 80% of EV Drivers Stick with Electric When Changing Their Car

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

A new wave of data has revealed just how loyal the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) drivers have become and the findings are striking. According to a national analysis by Evans Halshaw, one of the UK’s leading volume vehicle retailers, more than four in five EV owners (83.9%) choose another electric car when trading in their vehicle.

This level of brand-and-fuel loyalty outpaces every other driver segment, highlighting how firmly EVs have cemented their appeal.

“EVs have soared in popularity over the past few years,” said Rob Miller, Group Vice President at Evans Halshaw. “Our research shows that once drivers experience electric, they rarely go back or regret making the switch.”

🔌 Plug-In Drivers Go All In on Electric

The transition from plug-in hybrid to full electric driving is also gathering pace.
Evans Halshaw’s Sell Your Car data found that nearly a quarter (23.5%) of plug-in hybrid drivers upgraded to a 100 per cent electric model when changing vehicles.

“Plug-in hybrids are clearly acting as a bridge to full electrification,” Miller explained. “Almost one in four of these drivers go all-electric proof that once motorists taste electric performance and convenience, the move becomes a long-term commitment.”

⚡ What’s Driving EV Loyalty?

Industry analysts point to a mix of financial savings, infrastructure growth, and driver experience.

  • Government incentives such as the Electric Car Grant, which can reduce purchase costs by up to £3,750, continue to encourage adoption.
  • The EV Chargepoint Grant helps renters and flat residents cover 75 per cent of installation costs (up to £350), widening access to home charging.
  • Public infrastructure has expanded dramatically from 28,460 chargepoints in 2021 to 85,163 in 2025, a near 200 per cent increase.

“With lower running costs, better charging access, and the quiet, relaxing drives EVs offer, it’s no surprise that more motorists make the switch and don’t look back,” Miller added.

🚗 Beyond Fuel Type: Brand Loyalty Still Strong

Evans Halshaw’s research also sheds light on wider consumer habits. Across all fuel types, 43.5 per cent of UK drivers remain loyal to the same manufacturer when trading in their vehicle evidence that brand trust still plays a powerful role in purchasing decisions.

“Whether motorists stay with the badge they know or seek something new, our Sell Your Car service makes upgrading quick and hassle-free,” Miller said. “You can have the funds to shop for your next car in as little as 72 hours.”

🌍 The Road Ahead

As the UK accelerates toward its 2035 zero-emission target, these figures underscore a key truth: once drivers go electric, they rarely go back.
Rising confidence, maturing infrastructure, and smarter incentives are turning first-time adopters into lifelong EV advocates a crucial shift for achieving net-zero transport.
