Network Rail Pioneers Hydrogen Transport in Net‑Zero Rail Move

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

Network Rail has, for the first time, transported hydrogen via rail on Britain’s network. The trial occurred at the Tuxford Test Tracks site, where Freightliner hauled a series of hydrogen‑filled gas containers from Doncaster to High Marnham in a landmark operation. This initiative formed part of a rail‑industry innovation event involving partners such as Freightliner, GeoPura, HyMarnham Power and others, where a newly re‑engineered hydrogen‑powered shunting locomotive was also demonstrated alongside hydrogen‑powered generators and support vehicles.

The initiative was conducted on a route adjacent to GeoPura’s HyMarnham Power facility, one of the world’s first green hydrogen production plants to be connected to rail. It is located on the site of a former coal‑fired power station, enhancing the synergy between rail operations and clean energy supply.

This marks a significant step towards using rail infrastructure not only for passenger and freight transport but also as a distribution channel for hydrogen. The wider industry partners Freightliner, HyMarnham Power, GeoPura, Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions, Enspired Consulting, Rail Operations Group, Toyota UK and JCB demonstrate a collaborative approach across rail and energy sectors to drive sustainable transport and energy integration.

What this means:

This milestone signals a powerful move towards decarbonising rail operations and infrastructure logistics. Rail’s potential to serve as a hydrogen conduit opens pathways for hydrogen-powered locomotives, construction, maintenance, and off‑grid support systems. Leveraging existing rail networks as distribution arteries could help scale hydrogen usage and underpin net‑zero ambitions in transport and energy.
