Net Zero News: Kempower & EVCP Retrofit Southport EV Chargers

Welcome to Net Zero News, where we bring you the latest developments driving the UK’s transition to a net-zero future. In a significant step towards the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure, Net Zero News can reveal that Finnish DC fast-charging manufacturer Kempower has teamed up with new UK charging operator EVCP Solutions to inaugurate their first public charging site in Southport.
Net Zero News understands this landmark agreement was formally announced on 10 December 2025, with Kempower supplying its advanced DC fast-charging technology and EVCP Solutions overseeing day-to-day operations. The partnership signals both companies’ commitment to boosting chargepoint availability in the North West, supporting motorists and fleets as uptake of electric vehicles continues to climb.
Kempower, headquartered in Nokia, Finland, specialises in modular and scalable DC charging solutions that can be adapted to sites of varying size and demand. EVCP Solutions, newly formed and backed by private investors, has chosen Southport for its debut location given the town’s growing EV registration figures and regional transport links. The site reflects both partners’ strategic intent to address one of the UK’s ongoing challenges: ensuring reliable, high-power charging outside of major urban centres.
By integrating Kempower’s systems, which are compatible with all major EV manufacturers, EVCP Solutions will deliver an enhanced charging experience for drivers on the move. Net Zero News understands this forms part of Kempower’s wider UK roll-out strategy, which aims to support rapid charging corridors and urban hubs alike. At the same time, EVCP Solutions seeks to establish itself as a competitive operator capable of scaling across the country.
This collaboration matters because accessible fast charging is a cornerstone of the UK’s net-zero transport ambition, set out in the Transport Decarbonisation Plan. With the ban on new petrol and diesel car sales due in 2030, charging infrastructure must grow in tandem with the electric fleet. Reliable DC fast chargers help to remove range anxiety, encourage EV adoption and cut transport emissions, which account for around a quarter of the nation’s greenhouse gases.
Moreover, sites like Southport act as critical enablers for both local commuters and long-distance journeys. The expected benefits include reduced tailpipe emissions in coastal and regional towns, greater consumer confidence in EV ownership and the potential to stimulate economic activity by attracting drivers who might otherwise bypass the area.
The project is being delivered entirely by private sector partners. Kempower brings its decades of experience in power conversion technology and system integration, while EVCP Solutions provides project management, site acquisition and ongoing operational support. Although no public funding has been disclosed, Net Zero News understands that both organisations are exploring opportunities to apply for grants under the UK Government’s Rapid Charging Fund, which supports the deployment of high-power chargepoints across England, Wales and Scotland.
This development aligns with wider UK climate objectives, such as the Net Zero Strategy and the EV Infrastructure Strategy published by the Department for Transport. The site also contributes to the local authority’s commitment under the Sefton Council Air Quality Action Plan, which aims to reduce roadside pollution in the borough. By linking private investment to national policy goals, Kempower and EVCP Solutions are reinforcing the multi-stakeholder approach needed to decarbonise transport.
Local communities stand to gain from the new charging location through increased visitor footfall and the promotion of clean transport alternatives. However, challenges remain in ensuring grid capacity, site maintenance and integration with renewable energy sources. Both partners have pledged to monitor performance closely and to engage with stakeholders on any operational issues that arise.
Looking ahead, Kempower and EVCP Solutions intend to roll out additional sites across the UK in 2026, focusing on motorway service areas and town centres where charging demand is rising fastest. Net Zero News understands that further announcements are scheduled for the coming months, signalling a rapid expansion of the EVCP network.
