Leapmotor B05 Unveiled: The Electric Hatch Rival to Astra

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!

In an exciting development for the electric vehicle (EV) market, Leapmotor International, a joint venture between Stellantis and China’s Leapmotor, has unveiled its innovative B05 electric hatchback at the prestigious Munich Motor Show. Alongside this, they have also launched the B10 compact SUV, marking a significant step in their ambitious plans for expansion across Europe.

The B05 is set to make a splash in the C-segment hatchback category, taking on established rivals such as the Astra Electric and the VW ID.3. This fully electric vehicle is not just another addition to the market; it represents Leapmotor’s vision of combining innovation, affordability, and striking design. With a projected price tag below £30,000, the B05 is poised to attract a broad audience, particularly among younger, urban trendsetters seeking a stylish yet practical ride.

Utilising Leapmotor’s advanced Leap 3.5 technology architecture, the B05 is expected to hit the streets by late 2026, bringing with it a promise of a refreshing driving experience that goes beyond mere transportation. Tianshu Xin, CEO of Leapmotor International, describes the B05 as “more than a car – it’s a statement.” He emphasises the company’s commitment to innovation and accessibility, aiming to empower the next generation of drivers not just in Europe, but globally.

The design of the B05 is nothing short of captivating. With its sleek and muscular silhouette, it embodies Leapmotor’s ‘Tech-Nature Aesthetic’ philosophy, merging futuristic elements with urban practicality. Standout features include frameless doors and 19-inch ‘Swift-Wing’ alloy wheels, all contributing to a bold and modern appearance. Measuring 4,430mm in length, 1,880mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, it offers an impressive wheelbase of 2,735mm, ensuring a spacious and comfortable interior.

The B05 is not alone in making its debut at the Munich Motor Show. Alongside it is the B10 compact SUV, which is already launching in various European markets and is set to be available for order in the UK shortly, with deliveries expected this winter. The B10 positions itself as one of the most competitive electric SUVs in its class, targeting young professionals, small families, and urban dwellers.

Similar to the B05, the B10 is built on the versatile Leap 3.5 technology architecture, hinting at the advanced powertrain and technology features that its hatchback counterpart will offer. Under the hood, the B10 boasts a front motor delivering an impressive 218hp and 240Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 8.0 seconds, with a top speed of 106mph (170km/h).

For those concerned about range, the B10 will offer two battery options tailored to market demands. The Pro battery version features a 56.2kWh pack, providing an impressive WLTP range of up to 224 miles (361km). For those who require even more distance, the ProMax battery version, equipped with a 67.1kWh pack, delivers up to 270 miles (434km) on a single charge. Both battery options support 11kW AC charging and ultra-fast DC charging of up to 168kW, enabling drivers to achieve a 30-80% charge in under 20 minutes.

But it’s not just about speed and range; Leapmotor guarantees a unique driving experience with the B10, featuring a 50:50 weight distribution, a multi-link rear suspension, and advanced chassis tuning developed in collaboration with the Stellantis engineering team. The exterior design exudes a refined expression of youthful energy, with sleek curves and dynamic lines that are sure to turn heads.

Inside, the B10 doesn’t skimp on space or technology. The interior is bright, spacious, and highly customisable, with versatile seat configurations that allow for an adaptable space, providing one of the largest passenger areas in its segment. Keeping in line with the expectations of modern, tech-savvy drivers, the B10 comes equipped with a 14.6-inch floating touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity.

In a notable strategic move, Leapmotor is adopting a ‘one model, one version’ approach for the UK market, simplifying the selection process for potential buyers. While two trims will be available across various European markets, specific details for the UK are set to be revealed in the autumn, ensuring that consumers remain informed as the launch approaches.

The B10 is set to make its mark in over 30 countries and regions, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and South America, further solidifying Leapmotor’s position in the expanding global EV market. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the arrival of these new models from Leapmotor signals a promising shift towards accessible, stylish, and innovative electric vehicles. The B05 and B10 could very well be the catalysts needed to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility across the continent and beyond.

In conclusion, Leapmotor International’s unveiling of the B05 and B10 represents a pivotal moment in the electric vehicle industry. With an unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainability, these vehicles are not just about reducing emissions; they are about redefining the driving experience for a new generation. As we look forward to their arrival, it’s clear that Leapmotor is not just participating in the EV revolution but leading it with style and substance.
