Industrial energy‑efficiency innovation could save 4 MtCO₂ over next decade

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
Industrial energy‑efficiency innovations in the UK have the potential to cut a staggering 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over the next ten years, according to the latest figures released by the Carbon Trust. These promising results come from the Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA), supported by grant funding under the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio. Thirteen projects across diverse sectors including metalworking, food‑equipment cleaning, brewing heat recovery, in‑situ road resurfacing, and recycling of textiles and plastics have received a combined £7 million in funding, showcasing a broad application of innovation in reducing carbon emissions.
The IEEA enables the demonstration of novel, site-based technologies that deliver energy and resource efficiencies. Since its inception in 2018, across all four phases of the programme, over £28 million in public and private match funding has supported 30 projects, with grant levels ranging between £130,000 and £1 million—typically covering 40–60% of project costs. These innovations not only offer step‑change energy savings but often provide productivity, quality and other operational benefits as well.
The UK government’s backing of this accelerator underscores a collaborative approach to net zero: Lord Vallance, the Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, noted that programmes like the IEEA demonstrate how government and industry can work together to deliver real‑world climate solutions and support businesses from food to construction on their journey towards net zero.
In parallel, the Carbon Trust has recently been re‑appointed to lead another phase of the IEEA framework, through which up to £8 million of funding is available to accelerate uptake of energy‑ and resource‑efficient technologies in industry. This next phase is part of the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, reinforcing the ongoing governmental strategy of investing in low‑carbon industrial innovation alongside enhancing competitiveness and reducing emissions.
What this means:
The Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator demonstrates that targeted funding and collaborative mechanisms can drive substantial emissions reductions in the industrial sector currently the third largest emitting sector in the UK. The projected 4 million tonnes of CO₂ savings over a decade equates to the annual emissions of the UK’s largest gas‑fired power station and signals that innovation funding can have tangible impact. This initiative also reflects a scalable, replicable approach: as technologies are proven and deployed more widely across sectors, industrial decarbonisation can accelerate nationally, supported by continued public investment and industry engagement.
By showcasing real‑world solutions, the programme helps bridge the gap between net zero ambition and practical delivery enabling industrial businesses to align sustainability with productivity gains, while helping the UK stay on track for its net zero goals.
