Industrial Efficiency Grants Could Cut 4 Mt of CO₂ in a Decade

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.

Industrial actors in the UK are set to benefit from cleaner operations, as results from the Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA) reveal a path toward slashing 4 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next ten years. This potential stems from 13 funded projects spanning metalworking, brewery heat recovery, road resurfacing, and recycling innovations that have secured a combined £7 million in grants through the third and fourth phases of the IEEA, delivered by the Carbon Trust in partnership with Jacobs and Innovate UK Business Connect under the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

These projects underscore the tangible benefits of industrial innovation in energy and resource efficiency. In 2023, UK industry accounted for approximately 48 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, making such interventions critical in reducing emissions in one of the country’s largest emitting sectors. The IEEA builds on earlier phases funded under the Energy Innovation Programme, and in total has drawn on more than £28 million combined public and private investment.

The Carbon Trust and government officials highlight this initiative as evidence of fruitful collaboration between industry and policymakers. Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, praised the programme for supporting real‑world decarbonisation solutions across multiple business areas. Paul McKinney, Associate Director at the Carbon Trust, emphasised the long‑running partnership’s success in translating ambition into viable industrial technologies.

What this means:

The IEEA’s latest results demonstrate that targeted funding and industry partnerships can yield significant carbon savings while boosting operational efficiency. Embedding energy‑saving innovations across diverse sectors from brewing to manufacturing and infrastructure shows the scope for widespread adoption. Over 10 years, avoiding 4 million tonnes of CO₂ equates to emissions from one of the country’s largest gas‑fired power stations. The continuation and scaling of such initiatives would strengthen the UK’s industrial decarbonisation trajectory.
