Government Backs Solar Expansion with £1.08 bn AR7 Funding Boost

Welcome to Net Zero News, your daily briefing on the UK’s transition to a low‑carbon future.
As the UK accelerates its journey towards net zero, the government has unveiled a substantial boost to the solar sector through the latest Contracts for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 7 (AR7). The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has allocated a total of £1.08 billion per year between 2028/29 and 2031/32 to support both traditional offshore wind and floating offshore wind via AR7, with a slightly reduced figure of £900 million for 2032/33. Of this budget, £900 million annually will go to standard offshore wind installations (Pot 3), while £180 million per year is reserved for floating offshore wind projects (Pot 4). This initiative reflects the UK’s ambition to harness marine renewable energy across technology horizons.
Currently, the UK operates 45 offshore wind farms generating approximately 47.6 TWh annually, supplying over 30 % of national electricity demand. The AR7 funding supports the government’s commitment to scaling this sector, boosting energy independence, and reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.
What This Means:
This funding round signals a pivotal moment for renewable energy infrastructure in the UK. By securing consistent long‑term financial support, the government provides certainty to developers and investors, enabling planning and deployment of new offshore and floating wind projects. The delineation of funding between fixed and floating technologies underscores a strategic push to diversify the offshore wind portfolio, ensuring resilience and technological innovation.
The substantial allocation is likely to stimulate investment, manufacturing growth, and job creation within the sector, while driving down costs through economies of scale and competitive commissioning. It also reinforces the UK’s energy security strategy by expanding domestic clean power capacity, aligning with its net zero commitments.
However, the progress depends on effective implementation, project delivery, and grid integration. Continued collaboration between government, industry and regulators will be essential to capitalise on this momentum towards a cleaner energy future.
