Geely Auto Launches in the UK with EX5 Unveiling

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!

In an exciting development for the UK automotive landscape, Geely has officially launched as a standalone brand, marking its entry into the UK market with the introduction of its first model, the all-electric EX5 SUV. This ambitious move from the rapidly growing Chinese car manufacturer, part of the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group – which also owns or has strategic stakes in well-known names such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus, Smart, Proton, and Zeekr – heralds a new era for electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK.

The Geely EX5 is now available for orders following a successful ‘soft launch’. With a starting price of £31,990, the EX5 has been strategically positioned to compete in the C-segment SUV market, offering a more affordable option compared to rivals like the Škoda Enyaq, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. This price point has been made even more attractive thanks to Geely’s ‘Geely EV Grant’, which will remain in effect until the end of 2025.

This family-focused compact SUV is not just about affordability; it boasts a blend of cutting-edge technology, generous space, advanced safety features, and an appealing design. The EX5 comes equipped with a 60.2kWh battery pack, leveraging the brand’s innovative ‘short blade’ technology, which allows it to achieve an impressive WLTP range of up to 267 miles. Furthermore, its 160kW DC fast charging capability enables the vehicle to charge from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, making it a practical choice for families on the go.

In terms of performance, the EX5 does not disappoint. It offers up to 218 horsepower and 320Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in under seven seconds. The vehicle is loaded with features to enhance the driving experience, including a heat pump, active grille vanes, and driver-selectable regenerative braking. To provide peace of mind, Geely has also included an extensive eight-year or 125,000-mile warranty covering both the vehicle and its battery.

The EX5 is available in three trims: SE, Pro, and Max. Standard equipment is impressive, featuring heated and ventilated front massage seats, Geely Auto’s Fly-Me 16-speaker audio system, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch driver display, and a head-up display. These features underscore Geely’s commitment to delivering a high-quality, tech-savvy user experience.

To further entice potential customers, Geely Auto UK is offering its own EV Grant, which provides financial incentives similar to the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant. The EX5 SE, for instance, benefits from a £2,300 reduction, while the EX5 Pro and top-spec EX5 Max see reductions of £3,200 and £3,750, respectively, when customers take advantage of the grant.

Even before its official launch, the EX5 has garnered significant interest, with 1,000 expressions of interest and nearly 100 customer reservations already secured. Michael Yang, General Manager of Geely Auto UK, expressed optimism about the brand’s future. “We have strong ambitions for the UK market,” he stated. “Over the next three years, we’ll introduce around 10 new models, expanding across multiple segments to deliver technologically focused, safe, smart, and attainable electric mobility.”

Geely Auto’s mission goes beyond merely selling cars; the company aims to provide superior new energy mobility solutions. Yang emphasised this goal, stating, “Our aim is to tackle user pain points with a comprehensive NEV ownership ecosystem, making purchasing effortless and usage enjoyable, thereby accelerating the adoption of new energy vehicles.”

As part of its launch strategy, Geely Auto UK is hitting the ground running with 25 franchised dealer showrooms already operational and plans to establish another 25 by the end of the year, with a target of 100 by the end of 2026. This ambitious expansion will ensure nationwide coverage as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.

In addition to the vehicle itself, Geely Auto UK has partnered with Andersen EV to offer every EX5 customer a reduced-cost home wallbox, enhancing the convenience of home charging. Alternatively, customers can choose to receive £500 worth of public charging credit through Octopus Electroverse, granting access to over one million charge points across the UK and Europe.

Further enhancing the customer experience, Geely has joined forces with Octopus Energy to provide charging and tariff support for both home and public use. Additionally, partnerships with Green Flag for 24/7 roadside assistance and Cord Power Technologies for home charging solutions are also in the works, ensuring that customers receive comprehensive support throughout their ownership journey.

Finance and leasing options are being facilitated by CA Auto Finance UK in an exclusive partnership that offers flexible arrangements such as personal contract purchase, hire purchase, and advance payment plans for retail customers. For those interested in leasing, CA Auto also provides personal contract hire and business contract hire options.

Commenting on the collaboration with Geely, Alex Hughes, Managing Director at CA Auto Finance UK, expressed his excitement: “They are a huge force in the Chinese market, and we’re thrilled to play a role in bringing this innovative new brand to the UK. As the appetite for EVs continues to accelerate, this partnership highlights CA Auto Finance’s commitment to providing drivers with greater variety and access to sustainable, cutting-edge mobility solutions.”

As Geely embarks on this new journey in the UK, it is clear that the company is not just entering an already competitive market but aiming to redefine it. With its focus on technology, affordability, and customer satisfaction, the EX5 is poised to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change by promoting electric mobility. The future looks bright for Geely in the UK, and we can expect exciting developments in the coming years as they expand their electric vehicle offerings.

In conclusion, the launch of the Geely EX5 marks a significant milestone not only for the brand but also for the broader UK automotive sector as it moves towards a more sustainable future. With a commitment to providing innovative, accessible electric vehicles, Geely is set to play a crucial role in the transition to net-zero emissions and the acceleration of electric vehicle adoption in the UK. As we watch this space, it is important for us all to support brands that are dedicated to making a positive impact on our environment and driving the change we need.
