Fuel Cell Systems Joins HyHaul Project for Green Innovation

Notable sites include Reading and Avonmouth, where these advanced refuelling stations will be installed to support the logistics sector in reducing its carbon footprint.

Each HyFleet system is engineered to deliver comprehensive on-site hydrogen storage, compression, and dispensing capabilities tailored specifically for heavy-duty logistics operations. The foresight behind this project lies in its mission to demonstrate that hydrogen technology is not only market-ready but also scalable, thereby providing logistics operators with the tools they need to meet their ambitious net zero targets.

Designed with efficiency in mind, these systems feature robust storage solutions and high-capacity compression technology, ensuring rapid dispensing for high throughput HGV operations. The adaptability of the HyFleet systems allows for quick deployment and adherence to regulatory standards, thereby guaranteeing a reliable service for hydrogen-fuelled fleets operating along extensive transport corridors.

The HyHAUL project has garnered substantial support from the UK Government, receiving funding through the £200 million Department for Transport’s (DfT) Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme. This funding initiative aims to deploy 30 hydrogen-powered HGVs by 2026, with the long-term vision of expanding the fleet to 300 vehicles by 2030. The HyFleet is a UK factory-built, series production refuelling system, crafted by our talented team of engineers in West Berkshire. It is designed to meet the scale and reliability demands inherent in heavy-duty vehicle operations.”

He further elaborated on the innovation behind the HyFleet system, saying, “This system builds on the success of our HyQube system, a smaller, modular unit that has provided valuable solutions across the UK and Europe since 2019 for vehicle trials and small fleet usage. Our technology is tried and tested, and we’re proud to take it to the next level through this industry-first project with HyHAUL Mobility.”

Jon Perry, Senior Commercial Manager of HyHAUL Mobility, echoed Dr Juby’s sentiments, expressing excitement about the collaboration. “We’re thrilled to partner with Fuel Cell Systems Ltd to shape the future of hydrogen refuelling in the UK. The deployment of HyFleet systems along the M4 corridor is a crucial step in establishing the infrastructure necessary to support zero-emission freight,” he noted.

Perry emphasised the importance of the HyHAUL project in demonstrating the feasibility of hydrogen logistics at scale. “With the right partners and technology in place, we’re creating a practical and reliable hydrogen freight corridor that will help the industry move toward net zero,” he affirmed.
