Extra and Gridserve Launch 7 New EV Super Hubs for Motorways

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

In an exciting development for electric vehicle (EV) users across the UK, Extra MSA and Gridserve have announced a groundbreaking partnership that aims to revolutionise EV charging on the motorway network. This collaboration will introduce seven brand-new Super Hubs strategically located at key service areas, significantly enhancing the charging infrastructure for electric drivers on some of the country’s busiest travel corridors.

As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, the expansion of charging facilities is essential in supporting this green transition. By late 2026, the partnership will see the addition of 96 ultra-rapid charging bays across the Extra estate, which is set to bolster the capacity for EV drivers and make long-distance travel more accessible and convenient.

Each of these Super Hubs will be equipped with cutting-edge 400kW-capable chargers. These state-of-the-art chargers are designed to deliver an impressive performance, allowing the latest EV models to gain over 100 miles of range in under 10 minutes. This remarkable speed in charging will not only enhance the driving experience for electric vehicle owners but also encourage more motorists to consider making the switch from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles to cleaner alternatives.

The first of these innovative Super Hubs is set to open at Beaconsfield Services in December, with additional locations confirmed at Baldock, Cambridge, Cobham, Cullompton, Leeds Skelton Lake, and Peterborough. This network of Super Hubs will ensure that drivers can recharge their vehicles swiftly and effectively, regardless of their journey’s length.

Gridserve, which has been leading the charge in rapid EV charging since acquiring the Electric Highway in 2021, has highlighted that this ongoing partnership with Extra represents a significant step towards setting new benchmarks in speed, reliability, convenience, and accessibility for electric vehicle charging.

Daniel Kunkel, CEO of Gridserve, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion of their partnership, stating, “We’re incredibly proud to expand our partnership with Extra. Both of our organisations share the same vision – putting customers and the planet at the heart of everything we do. From Extra’s first site at Cambridge to its latest development near Warrington, its commitment to quality and sustainability is clear. Together, we’re building a network that gives EV drivers the confidence to be able to charge quickly, easily, and reliably, wherever they travel.”

This sentiment is echoed by Tom Dobson, CEO of Extra MSA Group, who remarked, “Our ambition has always been to go the ‘Extra mile’ for our customers, whether that’s through great food, drink and retail, high-quality design and amenity, or world-class EV charging. Partnering with Gridserve, one of the most trusted names in the sector, ensures we can meet the rapidly growing demand for convenient, high-speed charging across our network while future-proofing our estate to meet evolving customer needs.”

Moreover, Extra is also playing a pivotal role in supporting the Gridserve Electric Freightway project. This initiative is set to lay the groundwork for a nationwide charging network specifically designed for trucks, which is vital for the heavy goods transport sector. The first dedicated ‘eHGV charging hub’ is expected to open at Extra Baldock Services in December, marking a significant step towards electrifying freight transport in the UK.

This partnership between Extra MSA and Gridserve is not just about expanding the number of charging points; it is about creating a sustainable future where electric vehicles can thrive. By investing in infrastructure that meets the needs of modern drivers, they are paving the way for a cleaner, greener tomorrow.

As we move forward, it is crucial for all stakeholders in the transport sector to collaborate in enhancing charging infrastructure, ensuring that the transition to electric mobility is seamless and efficient. With organisations like Extra MSA and Gridserve leading the way, we can look forward to a future where electric vehicles are the norm rather than the exception, contributing to our collective goal of achieving net zero emissions.

Stay tuned for more updates on the evolution of EV infrastructure in the UK and how these advancements are shaping a sustainable future for all. Together, we can champion the cause of net zero and support the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable world.
