EV vs Petrol: Drivers’ Top 2 Priorities for Switching

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!
As we continue our journey towards a sustainable future, it is vital to engage with the voices that matter most—those of the drivers across the UK. EVA England is reaching out to you with an important call to action: participate in the annual Steer the Conversation Summer Survey. With only a few days left to make your voice heard, now is the time to share your perspectives on electric vehicles (EVs) and the transition towards greener transport solutions.
In the spirit of transparency and collaboration, EVA England has already unveiled some intriguing early findings from this year’s survey. These insights reveal a remarkable alignment among drivers—both those who currently own petrol vehicles and those who have embraced electric cars—on their top priorities regarding the shift to electric mobility.
One of the most significant revelations is that affordability remains at the forefront of drivers’ concerns. The survey indicates that lowering upfront purchase costs for electric vehicles is a critical factor that could influence many drivers to make the switch. In tandem with this, ensuring access to dedicated charging facilities is equally essential. This is particularly pertinent for those without private driveways, as innovative solutions such as cross-pavement charging options or designated charging bays are increasingly being identified as necessary to support urban drivers.
Furthermore, the survey highlights a growing confidence among EV owners. A remarkable 95% of electric vehicle drivers reported that they would recommend EVs to friends and family, a notable increase from 93% in the previous year. This rising confidence reflects the positive experiences of current EV drivers and underscores the potential for electric vehicles to become a mainstream choice for the average consumer.
However, while the enthusiasm for electric vehicles is palpable, the survey also sheds light on a stark regional disparity regarding access to off-street parking. Although only 12% of respondents stated that they lack access to off-street parking, this figure skyrockets in major urban areas, where over half of respondents reported similar challenges. This discrepancy highlights a pressing need for public charging solutions and innovative cross-pavement charging methods, particularly in densely populated cities where traditional parking options may be limited.
Vicky Edmonds, the Chief Executive of EVA England, emphasised the significance of these early findings. “These results underscore a vital point: whether we drive petrol, hybrid, diesel, or electric vehicles, we often share common concerns regarding affordability and practicality. This is precisely why surveys like these are invaluable. They help us pinpoint real-world needs and provide every driver with the opportunity to voice their opinions on future policies designed to benefit us all. I urge every driver in the UK, regardless of the type of vehicle they operate, to take just a few minutes to participate in this important survey,” she stated.
The survey will remain open until Sunday, 14 September, and completing it takes only about five minutes of your time. Every driver in the UK—be it an EV, hybrid, petrol, or diesel vehicle owner—is encouraged to contribute their thoughts and experiences.
This year’s Summer Survey is proudly supported by Octopus Energy through its Electroverse initiative. As a token of appreciation for your participation, all respondents will be entered into a prize draw to win one of five £100 Octopus Electroverse charging credits. What a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a greener future while standing a chance to benefit personally!
