Central Co-op Launches EV Charging at 26 Stores Nationwide

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,
Exciting developments are underway in the realm of sustainable transport as Central Co-op embarks on an ambitious expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities. This initiative, in collaboration with Zest, aims to provide convenient charging options across a growing number of stores located in the Midlands, Lancashire, and East Anglia.
As of now, EV charging is operational at six Central Co-op sites, including Wirksworth, Shelton Lock, Wildwood, Hambleton, Hethersett Local Centre, and Thornton-Cleveleys. These charging stations offer power levels ranging from 30kW to a robust 120kW, catering to the diverse needs of EV drivers. But that’s not all; an additional 20 stores are set to join the initiative, with Zest driving the deployment of charging facilities in both new and existing locations, as well as selected petrol stations.
This partnership is not just about convenience; it aligns with Central Co-op’s broader mission to foster a sustainable society for all. By offering customers the ability to charge their vehicles while they shop, the Co-op is responding to the increasing demand for dependable EV charging at retail locations.
Under this multi-year agreement, Zest takes the reins in funding, deploying, and operating the charging infrastructure. This collaboration is part of Zest’s expanding portfolio of partnerships with national retailers, demonstrating a significant shift towards integrating sustainable practices into everyday consumer experiences.
Andy Peake, Chief Operating Officer of Central Co-op, shared his enthusiasm about this initiative, stating, “We have ambitious goals to build on our longstanding carbon-neutral commitments and aim to be 100% green energy self-sufficient by 2030 and net zero by 2040. Working with key partners such as Zest to facilitate better access to EV charging moves us further along on our journey to sustainability.”
Robin Heap, CEO of Zest, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of accessibility in sustainable transport. “Expanding EV charging into retail locations such as Central Co-op stores ensures that sustainable transport is accessible where people live, work and shop. As a B Corp, we share the values of the Co-op movement, and we are making charging more convenient for customers while helping stores play a leading role in the transition to cleaner, more responsible mobility.”
This initiative from Central Co-op and Zest not only benefits EV users but also contributes to the broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting green energy solutions. The integration of EV charging stations into everyday retail environments is a significant step towards normalising electric vehicle usage and making sustainable transport a viable option for all consumers.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, collaborations like this one will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transportation. With the UK government pushing for a greener future and setting ambitious targets for reducing emissions, the timely rollout of EV charging infrastructure is paramount.
Central Co-op’s strategic move signals a commitment to environmental responsibility and an understanding of the evolving needs of its customers. By enhancing the availability of charging facilities, they are not only catering to the current market but are also preparing for a future where electric vehicles are a standard mode of transport.
As we continue to witness the transformations within the retail landscape, it’s heartening to see businesses taking proactive steps to support sustainable practices. The partnership between Central Co-op and Zest serves as an inspiring example of how collaboration can lead to meaningful change in the pursuit of net-zero emissions.
In conclusion, the expansion of EV charging facilities at Central Co-op stores is a notable stride towards a more sustainable future. By making electric vehicle charging accessible and convenient, this initiative aligns seamlessly with the growing ethos of sustainability within the retail sector. As we look ahead, it is partnerships like these that will pave the way for a greener, cleaner, and more responsible society.
