BMW Launches 500-Mile iX3: The Start of the Neue Klasse Era

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

In an exciting development for electric vehicle enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers, BMW has unveiled its latest innovation: the all-new iX3 SUV. This remarkable vehicle is not only setting new benchmarks for electric range but also heralding a transformative era for the iconic brand.

The iX3 marks the inaugural entry in BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ family of models, which promises to redefine automotive design and technology. With a staggering 40 new or updated models slated for release by the end of 2027, the iX3 is poised to lead the charge into a more sustainable future.

As the longest-range battery electric vehicle (BEV) currently available in the UK, the iX3 is a pivotal addition to BMW’s offerings, particularly in the corporate and fleet market. The first model to hit the roads will be the iX3 50 xDrive all-wheel-drive variant, boasting an impressive range of up to 500 miles from its robust 108.7kWh battery. Priced from £58,755, this model features a highly advanced electric all-wheel-drive system, utilising two motors to deliver a powerful 469hp and 645Nm of torque. With a swift acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, the iX3 promises a thrilling driving experience.

BMW has committed to expanding the iX3 family, with plans for additional variants, including a new entry-level model that will offer rear-wheel drive, providing a more affordable option for those eager to join the electric revolution.

The iX3’s groundbreaking electric range is made possible by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which features in-house developed electric drive systems and high-voltage batteries that incorporate innovative cylindrical cells. This technology will also be implemented across the entire group’s fully electric product lineup, including models from Mini and Rolls Royce.

One of the standout features of the iX3 is its cutting-edge 800V architecture, enabling ultra-fast 400kW rapid charging. This allows drivers to add an impressive 231 miles of range in just 10 minutes—a 30% improvement in charging speed compared to the previous generation of BMW eDrive technology. For those who prefer a more traditional charging method, the iX3 50 xDrive can also accommodate 11kW charging via an AC charger, or up to 22kW with the optional AC Charging Professional package.

This package also introduces bidirectional charging capabilities, a first for the BMW brand. Drivers can charge their personal devices at up to 3.7kW through vehicle-to-load functionality, and even power their homes with vehicle-to-home capability of up to 11kW when connected to a compatible wallbox.

The iX3 also showcases a revolutionary new electronics architecture, powered by four “superbrains.” These advanced processors work in harmony to enhance driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and comfort functions. This architecture lays the groundwork for a new software framework that can be continuously updated, allowing for the integration of future functionality, including AI-enabled features.

For drivers, the “Heart of Joy” driving dynamics system is particularly noteworthy. This innovative system manages the drivetrain, brakes, energy recuperation, and steering subfunctions, processing information up to ten times faster than conventional systems. This results in a significant boost in efficiency, enabling 98% of braking manoeuvres in the iX3 to be achieved solely through energy recuperation. Additionally, it acts as a “superbrain” for automated driving, consolidating all automated driving and parking functions into one cohesive unit.

Inside the cabin, the iX3 offers a stunningly modern design with the introduction of BMW Panoramic iDrive. This driver-focused cockpit features a full-width windscreen display, powered by the BMW Operating System X. This system integrates a Panoramic Vision display that spans the entire windscreen, an optional 3D head-up display, a new central display, and a redesigned multi-function steering wheel. BMW asserts that this setup “redefines the digital user experience” by prioritising intuitive, driver-focused interaction, all while adhering to the principle of “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.”

Entertainment options abound in the iX3, making long journeys and charging stops a pleasure. Drivers can enjoy music streaming through popular apps such as Spotify, engage in in-car gaming via AirConsole, and access a new video streaming app featuring platforms like Disney+, YouTube, and various international on-demand and live video services. Notably, the Zoom App has also been integrated, allowing for video calls on the go.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has received a significant upgrade, featuring two new voices and a fresh appearance for the BMW Panoramic Vision. This enhancement provides additional support for drivers through proactive suggestions and personalised routines, further enriching the driving experience.

Aesthetically, the iX3 introduces a completely new design language while retaining classic BMW elements such as the signature kidney grille and twin headlights. Bold design changes will be rolled out across the entire future BMW model lineup, ensuring that the iX3 stands out on the road.

Practicality is also at the forefront in the iX3, with a boot capacity of 520 litres that expands to a maximum of 1,750 litres when the 40/20/40 folding rear seats are lowered. For added convenience, an under-bonnet storage compartment provides an additional 58 litres of cargo space. An electrically operated tow bar can be specified, with the 50 xDrive model boasting a maximum towing capacity of 2,000kg.

The new iX3 will be available in the UK in three distinct trim levels: iX3, iX3 M Sport, and iX3 M Sport Pro, each offering an extensive array of standard features. Key standard equipment includes 20-inch alloy wheels, under-bonnet storage, an electrically operated charging flap, heated front seats with electric adjustment, Driving Assistant Plus with automatic cruise control, and the impressive 400kW DC / 11kW AC charging capabilities.

The iX3 M Sport trim enhances the vehicle with M exterior styling, 20-inch M Sport alloy wheels, a sports steering wheel, translucent dashboard lighting, and premium Veganza/M PerformTex upholstery. Opting for the iX3 M Sport Pro trim elevates the experience further with upgraded M Sport seats, an M high-gloss black rear diffuser, M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers, BMW Iconic Glow, Adaptive LED headlights, and a striking Shadowline glass 3D kidney grille.

In alignment with BMW’s commitment to sustainability, approximately one-third of the iX3 is constructed from secondary materials, including marine plastics, recycled aluminium, and PET textiles. This ‘secondary first’ principle prioritises the use of recycled over newly extracted raw materials, resulting in the new iX3 50 xDrive having a 30%-plus lower product carbon footprint (CO2e) over its lifecycle compared to its predecessor.

The iX3 will be manufactured at the newly constructed BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary, which stands out as the first BMW Group facility to operate without fossil fuels as part of its regular operations.

Series production is set to commence in autumn 2025, with the first UK customer deliveries of the iX3 50 xDrive anticipated on 7 March 2026. As we eagerly await the arrival of this groundbreaking electric SUV, it’s clear that BMW is not just keeping pace with the evolving automotive landscape but is actively shaping a greener, more sustainable future for all.

Stay tuned for more updates on the iX3 and other exciting developments in the world of electric vehicles!
