National Grid Electricity Distribution: Pioneering Energy Innovation

We are excited to bring you the latest on an innovative project that promises to revolutionise the way we manage our electricity networks, particularly in rural areas. Funded by Ofgem’s Network Innovation Allowance, the High Voltage (HV) Pilot project is set to leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance the connectivity between high voltage (HV) networks and low voltage (LV) systems.

At the heart of this initiative lies the utilisation of smart meter data, helicopter survey insights, and advanced machine learning techniques. This data-driven approach is crucial in identifying where reinforcement may be necessary to meet the increasing demand for electricity. As we all know, rural areas often face unique challenges, particularly with single-phase HV sections and transformers that can create imbalances and inefficiencies in the network.

David Penfold, an innovation and deployment engineer at National Grid Electricity Distribution, emphasised the importance of understanding how the HV network connects at a phase level. He stated, “Understanding exactly how our HV network is connected at a phase level is essential for a smarter, more flexible grid.” This vision aligns perfectly with our collective goal of fostering sustainable energy practices.

Penfold further elaborated on the project’s potential, saying, “This project empowers us to make data-driven decisions, leading to optimised rural infrastructure. It’s about precision, innovation, and preparing for a future powered by clean, reliable electricity.” This focus on a sustainable future is exactly what we need as we transition towards a net-zero economy.

Another key player in this initiative, Gav Berry, who serves as a secondary modelling engineer within the National Grid DSO modelling and analysis team, shared his insights on the significance of accurate phasing data. “Accurate phasing data can improve National Grid Electricity Distribution power system models, and provide network designers with the information required to design a balanced and efficient electricity network,” he noted.

The collaboration between National Grid Electricity Distribution, CGI, and Loughborough University aims to create a low-cost, scalable solution to enhance phase balancing without the necessity for additional visual surveys. This innovative method holds the promise of not only saving costs but also enhancing the overall performance of the network. If the project proves successful, it could lead to savings of up to £2.9 million through targeted interventions and improved network management.

Moreover, this initiative could significantly alleviate voltage issues faced by rural customers and enhance efficiency across the board. By facilitating an increase in connection opportunities, this project is paving the way for a more robust and resilient electricity network that can better serve our communities.
