UK Government Unveils 16,000 New EV Chargers for Midlands

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!
Exciting news for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers alike: the Midlands is set to receive a substantial boost in EV charging infrastructure, thanks to a generous investment from the UK Government. Over £40 million has been allocated to introduce more than 16,000 new electric vehicle chargers throughout the region, marking a significant step towards a greener future.
The announcement was made by Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood, who confirmed that 13 local authorities across the Midlands, in collaboration with Midlands Connect, will benefit from a total of £40.8 million from the Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund. This funding is aimed at rolling out thousands of chargers in various locations, including smaller towns and rural areas, ensuring that the transition to electric vehicles is accessible to all.
This latest funding initiative is part of a broader strategy that has already seen over £2.3 billion invested to assist both industry and consumers in making the switch to electric vehicles. The UK Government is committed to enhancing the public charging network, which has been expanding rapidly. In fact, there are now 75,000 public charge points available across the nation, with a remarkable 20,000 chargers added just last year.
Minister Greenwood emphasised the importance of making EV charging as seamless and convenient as possible, stating, “Making charging as seamless and as easy as possible is crucial to making the switch to electric a success. Rolling out over 16,000 chargers across the Midlands will make driving an EV cheaper and easier, especially for those without a driveway.” This initiative is expected to not only enhance the user experience for current EV owners but also encourage more drivers to consider making the switch to electric.
Greenwood further highlighted the wider benefits of electric vehicles, mentioning their potential to drive economic growth, reduce emissions, and improve the quality of life for residents in the Midlands and beyond. “Electric vehicles will power growth, cut emissions, and improve lives in the Midlands and beyond, as we continue to deliver our Plan for Change,” she added.
Maria Machancoses, the CEO of Midlands Connect, expressed her enthusiasm about the funding boost, stating, “We are delighted that our collaboration with local authorities has resulted in a significant funding boost for electric vehicle infrastructure across the region. This is a great step towards establishing a reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure network across the Midlands, which will become increasingly important as we move closer to the 2035 ban on diesel and petrol vehicles.”
Machancoses also reiterated the commitment to continue working with local authorities to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure throughout the Midlands. This proactive approach is crucial in ensuring that the region is prepared for the future of transportation.
Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, voiced his satisfaction with the funding success. “I’m pleased that Worcestershire, alongside other local authorities, has been successful in this bid for significant funding towards boosting electric vehicle infrastructure,” he remarked. “It’s hoped that installing more public charge points will not only support those who already have an electric vehicle but also encourage others to make the move towards purchasing one.”
The implications of this investment are profound. As the UK targets a greener future, the expansion of EV charging infrastructure is pivotal in facilitating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The Midlands, with its diverse landscape and communities, will benefit immensely from this initiative, ensuring that residents have access to charging facilities no matter where they live.
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, the transition to electric vehicles represents a significant opportunity for positive change. By investing in reliable and accessible charging infrastructure, the UK Government is not only supporting current EV drivers but also paving the way for future generations to embrace cleaner, greener transport options.
As we look towards a future where electric vehicles dominate our roads, it is essential that we remain engaged and informed. The developments in the Midlands serve as a beacon of progress, reminding us all of the crucial steps needed to achieve net-zero emissions and combat climate change. Together, as champions of net zero, we can advocate for continued investment in sustainable infrastructure, ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for our communities and the planet.
