Teachers Benefit from EV Charging Funding Opportunities

In a significant advancement for sustainable transport, the UK has recently witnessed the installation of 1,407 electric vehicle (EV) charging sockets outside schools and colleges. This initiative is set to make it easier for teachers and EV drivers to charge their vehicles, aligning perfectly with our collective journey towards a net-zero future.

Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, confirmed that these chargers have been strategically fitted at educational institutions since March of last year, thanks to a generous investment of £3 million from the Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS). This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the electric vehicle infrastructure across the country.

The recent deployment of charging points at schools follows the successful establishment of over 59,000 workplace charging sockets funded by the WCS since its inception in 2016. In 2024 alone, the scheme has also supported the installation of an additional 6,500 sockets in workplace car parks, further extending the reach of EV charging facilities.

What makes this initiative even more commendable is the potential for schools to open these chargepoints to local residents and visitors. This not only integrates charging facilities into the daily lives of the community but also provides an additional revenue stream for schools, enhancing their sustainability efforts.

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the green transition by extending the Workplace Charging Scheme, alongside the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant, for another year. This funding is part of an impressive £2.3 billion package aimed at supporting both industries and consumers in making the transition to electric vehicles more accessible and sustainable.

Minister Greenwood emphasised the importance of schools in the community, stating, “Schools are the beating heart of our towns and communities, and rolling out chargers here shows we are building a practical and reliable charging network designed around people’s daily lives.”

She added, “Reaching 1,000 sockets at schools is a particularly significant milestone and builds on a record January for electric car sales, as consumer confidence in the electric transition grows every day. This is helping support jobs, make the UK a clean energy superpower and deliver our Plan for Change.”

One inspiring example of this initiative in action is the Northfleet School for Girls, where Headteacher Chris Norwood has championed environmentally friendly practices as part of the school’s vision. “Developing an environmentally friendly site is an important part of our school vision and practice,” Norwood explained. “We have been able to play our part in reducing emissions while working with students to educate them in creating a more sustainable future.”

Since 2017, the school has implemented solar panels, LED lighting, and car chargers, resulting in impressive energy savings exceeding £500,000. These funds are reinvested into the school, ensuring that students receive the best possible education.

Furthermore, the installation of car chargers has generated over £2,000 in additional funding, enabling the school to create a new farm classroom for all students to utilise. Norwood’s commitment to modelling best environmental practices is pivotal in inspiring students to embrace sustainability in their future lives.
