Surge in BEV Registrations: A Growing Trend

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!

In an exciting development for the UK’s automotive industry, the production of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and hybrids (HEVs) has shown a promising uptick. In January, production increased by 1.5%, reaching a total of 30,028 units. This marks the highest monthly output since December 2022, when production peaked at an impressive 47.2%. These figures, released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), highlight a significant trend towards electrification in the UK car market.

Notably, plug-in and hybrid vehicles accounted for a substantial 42.2% of all cars manufactured in January. This shift towards electrification is not just a response to environmental concerns but also a reflection of changing consumer preferences and the automotive industry’s commitment to sustainability.

However, it’s important to note that while the production of electric and hybrid vehicles is on the rise, overall car production in the UK has faced some challenges. A significant 80.4% of the cars produced were intended for export, yet the export volumes saw a decline of -9.2%, totalling 57,140 units. Meanwhile, production for the domestic UK market fell sharply by -30.4%, resulting in only 13,964 units being manufactured for local consumers.

Overall, the UK automotive sector experienced a notable decline of -17.7% in production during January, with a total output of 71,104 cars and 6,908 commercial vehicles (CVs), bringing the total to 78,012 units. This downturn follows a remarkably strong January in 2024, where car and CV output had surged by 21.0% and 27.5%, respectively. The current figures reflect a broader weakness in key global markets—including the EU, China, and the UK itself—coupled with planned model changeovers that manufacturers have undertaken.

The demand for exports continues to play a crucial role in the production of commercial vehicles, which accounted for 61.7% of the UK’s output of vans, trucks, taxis, buses, and coaches. As the industry grapples with changes in demand, it is becoming increasingly clear that manufacturers must adapt to evolving market conditions.

This news arrives amidst significant restructuring within manufacturing plants and a slower-than-expected rollout of new vehicle models. As manufacturers respond to a softening demand in both the UK and other key markets, the need for strategic planning becomes ever more pressing.

In light of the substantial investments that the automotive sector requires, the SMMT is advocating for the UK government to place the needs of the automotive industry at the forefront of its forthcoming industrial and trade strategies. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, emphasised the urgency of this matter:

“UK vehicle producers face a perfect storm of global trade uncertainty, challenging manufacturing conditions, and a market transition which is proving tougher than expected. The sector is doing all it can to keep production plans on track but needs government to ensure automotive is at the heart of its forthcoming industrial and trade strategies with promised funding invested as soon as possible. Doing so will help ensure our competitiveness and safeguard the billions of pounds of investment, jobs, and economic growth which is now at stake.”

The automotive industry stands at a pivotal moment, where the future of vehicle production is intertwined with sustainability and innovation. The rise in electric and hybrid vehicle production is a promising sign of progress, but the challenges of market fluctuations and production demands remind us that the road to a net zero future is filled with obstacles that must be navigated carefully.

As we continue to champion sustainability and the transition to electric mobility, it is imperative that we remain informed and engaged with the developments within the automotive sector. The rise of electric vehicles is not just about numbers; it is about paving the way for a greener future, reducing our carbon footprint, and ensuring that the next generation inherits a planet that is thriving, not just surviving.

Let us continue to support the growth of the electrification movement, advocate for policies that bolster the automotive industry, and encourage the transition towards a more sustainable future. Together, we can make a significant impact and help drive the change that is so desperately needed.

Stay tuned for more updates on the electrification of transport and the ongoing efforts to achieve net zero emissions. Thank you for your continued support in this vital journey!
